    Wordle

I'm 11 days and running on this thing. Is anyone else hooked on it? When I hit the 5th guess it feels like abject failure haha.

    Re: Wordle

There was a game show on the Game Show Network back in the aughts called LINGO, which used the same principle (apparently it is still running).

There was an online version of it, where you could compete against other players. It was timed, so not only did you need to get the answer first, you needed to get it quickest. They would give you the first letter. Five words made a game.

Some aficionados established a LINGO LEAGUE where you would challenge other players and move up and down a leaderboard accordingly.

Long story short, I cheated very, very much. I had a database with all 5 letter words and macros set up to quickly find the answer (or best next guess to get to an answer quickly) and type it in at machine speed.

I'd only lose a "word" if the other player guessed very well. I was on a 51 game winning streak when it became difficult to find anyone in the league willing to challenge me. So I retired on that high note.

Pretty sure the reason you can get the next day's word is because it was already tomorrow in UK. Which is where Wordle originates.

I can give you the next week to prove it to you, if you want.

    Re: Wordle

I've avoided the Wordle craze so far, and figure I'm inoculated against it, somehow. It's just not my kind of puzzle, in the same way that I haven't seen an episode of Wheel of Fortune since I went to college and moved out of my parents' house.

I dunno exactly how to describe it, but it's a real issue; maybe too much guessing, not enough actual skill? It must mean something that I don't "get" Wordle, but I still do Sudoku like they're crack...

Just messaged you with the answers. Now I can't play for a week.

    Re: Wordle

It would be more challenging if there was a time limit per line, like on the Lingo game show. It helps if your first guess is a word with two vowels, then you can sit there all day organizing letters. I don't understand why this is popular- just bring back the game show.

    Re: Wordle

Lack of a time limit is definitely part of why it seems like a guess game more than a skill game to me.

The times I've played Wordle, I make my first word "MEDIA" and unless I hit a home run, I follow up with "HOUSE," and from there, I have all 5 vowels and a good mix of consonants to work with. It's usually pretty easy peasy from there. I'm sure there are other, similar "key words," but those are my two.

I use AUDIO or AUREI to start. STOAE sometimes. Like in wheel of fortune you want to get RSTLNE in early.

    Re: Wordle

AUDIO. Man, I can't believe I didn't get there on my own. AUDIO is a good one. I'll start working that one in.

The other two, not so much. It's dumb to enforce extra, self-imposed rules, but weird words that I've never heard are out for wordle, including AUREI and STOAE. What is this, Scrabbdle?
