Aroldis Chapman needs a number change

Talking about Reds jerseys and the pursuit of the almighty dollar in another thread got me to thinking: Can anybody tell me why Aroldis Chapman is not wearing #100 on the back of his jersey?

He throws a baseball harder than any human ever. He's regularly over the century mark. It's unreal how fast he throws the ball. How about marketing that for all it's worth?

Is there an MLB rule stipulating which numbers you can use?

All the same, I don't know that I would want to encourage him. He's already got the tattoos and license plates. He's gonna have to keep the fastball around 97-98 on average if he's really a starter now.

Because he would look like a spring training invite?

I think we know he's not. Plus #54 already has that non-roster invitee smell to it.

His fastball only averages 97-98 as a reliever.

    Key word = only?

Calling Sidd Finch (who I think wore #168)!

Charlie Finley would go for that.

I don't think MLB would go for that.

However, I think in honor of his favorite pitch, you could give him the number 1.

I'm just relieved that the thread title, which shows up on the main page as "AroldisvChapman needs a...." didn't end with "new kidney" or some such thing.

I believe 1 is retired. That was Hutch's number. 54 seems to fit him to me. I hope he keeps it.

If you're going to go there, just make it 106.

Why did you have to bring his driving into this?
