What an effed up world we live in. I pray for his family. So sad.

    RIP Ryan.

What can I say, other than joining in the sentiments of others, in that this is truly awful news. Freel always gave 100%!

Same here. I've known far too many people who've taken their own lives.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

This is very, very sad. I really enjoyed Freel's time in Cincinnati. My prayers to his family.

Me too; I'm just stunned by this sad sad news. He must have been very troubled. I just loved him during his five seasons with Reds.

I always felt a connection to Freel since he lived here in Jax. This is just wrong.

    Re: Ryan Freel commits suicide

I didn't realize it, but he'd just recently been hired on to be a baseball coach. Unreal.

Former Major League Baseball player Ryan Freel was named the head coach at St. Joseph Academy on Thursday.

Freel, who played at Sandalwood and graduated from Englewood in 1994, played for five major league teams in a career that spanned 15 years.

He was selected by Toronto in the 10th round of the 1995 draft out of Tallahassee Community College and played in the Blue Jays farm system six seasons before his major league debut in 2001. Freel’s best stretch was a six-year run with Cincinnati. He’s a career .268 hitter.

Freel’s hire is the second major move by St. Joseph in a week. The Flashes hired former Florida star Brandon James as its football coach last week, continuing a major overhaul of their athletic staff in the wake of a new administration coming in.

“We are very excited to have Coach Freel leading our baseball program at St. Joe,” said Principal Tom McGlinn in a statement.

“He relates well with both student-athletes and parents alike. He’s familiar with the Florida high school baseball programs having played at Sandalwood [and Englewood] High School. His enthusiasm, energy, and experience make him a perfect fit for our school.”
