Let me make a baseball analogy. Andy Dalton is Mike Leake. Mike Leake can win you ballgames and he can be pretty good at times. But I want more and he isn't the guy I want starting for me in game 7 of the World Series. You could certainly do worse, but I want someone else out there if I could choose.

I am sure the league average isn't good on 40+ yard throws. I just know what I see and I see a guy who struggles to throw the ball far enough to let one of the best two deep threats in the game run under the ball.
Oh I'm not saying Dalton has a better deep ball. The arm strength isn't as big of a problem as his accuracy on deep balls if you ask me. He can get em out there but they're often over or underthrown.

I was just pointing out Brady because he's been wildly successful without attacking wayyyy down the field. Intermediate passing is where the best QBs in the league make their money.

Really you would take Schaub, Rivers, Ben, and Vick over Dalton. Rivers fell off the edge a long time ago. As for Schaub there is a reason the Texans remain a running team. Ben is being exposed by his lack of talent, and Vick is still turnover prone.

Dalton isn't pretty but he's smart and effective. Those guys don't break the bank either.

And he has room to be more effective. I mentioned a while back in this thread, but he was a guy that went exclusively out of the spread in college. That's not an insignificant transition, and there were many scouts that believed he wouldn't be able to make the transition. He won't magically grow a stronger arm, but his decision making could get much better.

I'd take some of those guys in their prime (not Schaub), but I wouldn't take any of them today.

Rivers threw for 4600+ yards only 2 years ago, succeeding 3 back-to-back-to-back MVP type seasons, and he's actually playing really well ATM. Fell off the edge? C'mon.

I can agree with the other three, though.

If you think Andy's arm strength is bad look at film of Rivers. McCoy has done a great job of focusing on short quick hits to mask his deficiencies.

How many times do you truly have someone that, given all options, you'd not trade in for anyone else in the entire league? Those types of players are rare.

Sure, everyone agrees that Andy Dalton isn't the NFL version of Justin Verlander or Clayton Kershaw or what have you, but like Leake, instead of wishing for someone else the Bengals don't have, you should appreciate what it is you do have.

Dalton has already helped his team get to the playoffs two consecutive years and likely will a third. I don't know why Bengals fans would want to spend time wishing they had someone else instead of just enjoying the wins as they come.

Plus when discussing these guys I think we have to look at contracts as well. I will take a reasonable Dalton over an overpriced Flacco, or Romo any day of the week

    My name isn't Doug.

Random thought, I think the Bengals should sign Dalton's former TCU teammate Casey Pachall next year. I think it's pretty clear he's going to go undrafted.

Even still, in baseball terms, Andy Dalton is a solid #3 starter. Sure, it is possible he turns into Cliff Lee and gets every last ounce of potential out of his tools, but it isn't likely.

I appreciate Dalton. I lived through the 90's as a Bengals fan. I know how much worse it could be. But I have also seen better from a Bengals quarterback and plenty of better around the league currently IMO. I just don't see him as a quarterback who is leading you to a Super Bowl. I hope I am wrong because I want the Bengals to win, but I just don't see him being that kind of a guy.

Skills to be a top 10 QB??? Huh?

Haven't seen anything resembling that to this point...

He doesn't need to carry this team to the Super Bowl; he just needs to make sure he doesn't get in the way.

Exactly my feelings. Solid and steady will get the job done with what is around him.

He does good things every week. If you don't look at some of Dalton's best throws and see any potential than you're probably too married to the idea that Dalton sucks.

I have Sunday ticket, I see plenty of bad QB play, Andy Dalton is not a bad QB.
