But its just a tawdry story that doesn't affect any of us, really. People lied and did stupid things. Gosh, whoda thunk it? Besides all the wasted time at the water cooler talking about this, that is.

Who cares? Bah. There are bigger problems that deserve some time and discussion and thought. This doesn't.
That's one reason it is a big deal. Whether it be fake girlfriends or fake terrorist attacks, media sources are regularly proven to be unreliable. And that affects lives. Just because it doesn't involve you today, if people can make up stories that aren't true and get the media to help spread the false news, then no one is safe from having their lives destroyed by fraud.

The current generation of sports media is a joke, but we already knew that.

It's a big deal because this "feel good" story was shoved down our throats the entire football season and now it turns out it was all a great big lie. Even after T'eo claims he found out on Dec 6th that she wasn't real, he still gave four more national interviews -- including during the Heisman presentation and the BCS Championship game -- in which he continued to express his grief about her "death". This guy has some serious issues.
"I talked to an advance scout that told me if Joey Votto and Albert Pujols were on the same team he'd advise his team to do the unthinkable...pitch around Votto to get to Pujols." - Buster Olney, ESPN

I fall on both sides of the fence. This story doesn't effect me, doesn't hurt anybody, doesn't really do anything. A LB for ND, a guy who finished 2nd in the Heisman made up a girlfriend and told anyone who would listen about her.

That said the story was forced down any sports fan for the better half a 3 months. The media, both local and national, forced this story down our throats about the character of this guy. What he was going through and what kind of season he was having. For those who enjoy college football and follow the Heisman were sold a bill of goods by Manti. The story was shoved down college football's throats only to end up being made up.

In many RZers backyard. Florence y'all

How long before this story is retracted by the Freedom after pressure from local ND supporters to boycott and blackball their organization?

Yea. All of it speaks to honor, integrity, truth...sports is a monstrosity in our culture, a gazillion dollar business, many, many people spend a great deal of time and invest a lot of their hard earned money into the sports monopolies, yet when the workers in the system have moral failures, too many times people want to say "who cares, its just sports." No, like it or not, its a part of the fabric of our culture and it is important that integrity or lack thereof is demonstrated. If this isn't a big deal, then maybe fixing games isn't a big deal either. Slippery slope argument or logical application of the reason that this does matter?

Of course, we could also point out that one of the gods of the sports kingdom is once again proven to be an impotent idol, has clay feet, etc. and so forth, so we can teach people that people should not worship idols.

There are several reasons it matters. I'm sure the sportswriters are working furiously to tell us why.

Actually one of the stories that came out was that someone did raise funds to send flowers to her "service". If that's true then someone did get hurt in all of this. Does that change your tune?

Personally I despise fake people and folks who'll do anything for attention (from Chad Johnson to the class clown in 4th grade). If he was really duped then he is the most clueless athlete ever and I'd like to know that too. I'd also like to know who was in on this and why they went through so much trouble. There's a lot I want to know

Has anyone mentioned yet that Manti Te'o is working on a new reality TV show just in case his NFL career doesn't work out? Or contemplating a contract for a spotlight on "My Life is a Lifetime Movie"?

The Florence Freedom (empty box) bobble head night is an awesome bit of marketing.

The greatest trick Te'o ever pulled was convincing the world his girlfriend didn't exist.
    Choo got it, dude.

Re: Manti Te'o didn't really have a dead girlfriend

ESPN's Outside the Lines reports that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo confessed in December to being the ringleader of a hoax that duped Notre Dame ILB Manti Te'o into believing he had a deceased girlfriend.

Tuiasosopo was reportedly "crying" when he admitted to duping Te'o to a church friend. Interviewed by ESPN's Shelley Smith, the friend said Tuiasosopo performed similar hoaxes in the past. "(Ronaiah) told me that Manti was not involved at all, he was a victim," the friend recounted. "... The girlfriend was a lie, the accident was a lie, the leukemia was a lie. ... It's not only Manti, but he was telling me that it's a lot of other people they had done this to." If ESPN's report is true -- and Outside the Lines has a long history of reliability -- Te'o's 2013 NFL Draft stock should not be significantly impacted. Jan 18 - 12:49 PM
