Sign him ASAP. You can never have too many Cy Young winners.

    The fools.

Don't they know he is a future Cy Young winner?

In fairness he was DFAed for Jeff Karstens, so it isn't like he was just outright released.

Can we have a 7-man starting rotation? Sign him quick! We'd have all 7 of the guys getting Cy Young votes at the end of the 2013 season!

If he comes back to Cincinnati, does that mean we officially win the Rolen deal?

Nope. Tough to win a trade when you were the only market for the player you traded for and still gave up real talent to get it.

    Often repeated but rarely challenged.

What evidence do you have that the Reds were the only destination Rolen could have ended up at in July 2009? Even if you had no other contenders, they had to meet the Jays price. Why didn't they just trade a bag of balls for him? Would that have been too much?

At the time, everything you heard was that Rolen was forcing his way out and he would only accept a trade to a team in the Midwest. Go look at who was playing third base for all of the teams in the Midwest at the time. The Reds were the only option.

Obviously you have to trade something for him. But you probably shouldn't be trading a top trading chip plus a proven Major Leaguer for a 34 year old with a bad back on a 1 year and 2 month deal.

This has all been hashed out a thousand times though. That is how I see it. I am leaving it at that.

The Cards went all year without much at third that year, FWIW.

I have two issues with this. One, I'm not sure what EdE had proved to that point besides that he was an awful fielder. Two, I really think that Zach Stewart's value is and was extremely overrated by many on this board.

Have you considered that you may have just grossly misvalued Stewart?

I've seen the challenges because I've read dougdirt's response many, many times. The thing is it is one man's opinion and pure conjecture. The one holding the position can't provide hard evidence for his position anymore than you provide hard evidence against it. So have fun with that

Not really opinion when you tell people to go look at who was playing 3b in the Midwest and that Cincy was the only option. That is being stated as fact.
