Where Has All the Pitching Gone...?

We all get upset by our bullpen and rightly so, but lately we've seen some teams with horrible bullpens, too. Take Friday night for instance. There was once a day when no team (except the expansion Mets in 1962-64) that had a bullpen so filled with holes as nost of the major league teams. Why?

Do the hitters have that much of an advantage?

Are pitchers that rare a comodity?

Is it steriods?

Is there just no talent with the exception of the White Sox, Tigers, and Mets?

I can remember when having an ERA of over 3.00 was considered borderline. If you were over 4 you were marginal. If it ever got to 5, you were fodder. Now, we bragg about starter with 4.50 ERA's and relievers with 3.90 ERA's. What happened?

I watched the White Sox relievers throw consistently in the upper 90's and wondered where they got these pitchers. They were all young men and very talented. Sure, our farm system is still in shambles from the Schott Administration, but was scouting that bad? And it seems all of MLB is in the same boat.

Like the Peter Paul and Mary song, "Where has all the pitching gone...long time ago."
