USC kicker Danelo found dead at bottom of cliff

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...x.html?cnn=yes

SAN PEDRO, Calif. (AP) -- Southern California kicker Mario Danelo was found dead Saturday about 120 feet down a rocky cliff near Point Fermin lighthouse.

The body was reported by a passer-by at about 4:30 p.m., said Martha Garcia of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Danelo, the 21-year-old son of former NFL kicker Joe Danelo, made 15 of 16 field goals this season and led the Trojans in scoring with 89 points. The junior made two field goals in the Rose Bowl on Monday to help USC beat Michigan 32-18.

Speaking on behalf of Trojans coach Pete Carroll, USC spokesman Tim Tessalone said: "We were stunned to hear about this tragedy. This is a great loss. Mario was a wonderful young man of high character.

"He was one heck of a kicker. He was a key ingredient in our success the past two years. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Trojan family go out to the Danelo family on this sad, sad day."

This has been a strange past few months in the world of sports.

My heart goes out to all who knew him.

I agree...and these haven't been the garden variety incidents either.

I surprised that an All-American QB hasn't died from ebola during the last month or so.

Re: USC kicker Danelo found dead at bottom of cliff

I posted this in another thread but it deserves its own thread. Thanks pedro. This is very sad, only 21 years old. As I stated in the other thread, this is the second player USC has lost in the past eight months. Last May, Ryan Francis, a freshman PG on the basketball team, was shot and killed while visiting family back home in Louisiana. Three summers ago USC lost Drean Rucker, one of the top LB recruits in the country in a boating accident. On top of that, former Trojans Darrell Russell and Michael Bastianelli died tragically in a car crash last December. It's been a rough three or four years for the USC program.

It appears Danelo was drunk at the time of the accident.

This happens every so often at Red River Gorge. More often than not, someone gets up in the middle of the night to take a pee and wanders
over the edge of a cliff.

Jamie was one of my friends from high school. Really great guy that was involved with the band program during high school. He was also involved with a church group at college and played baseball through his sophomore year oh high school I believe.

Just a really great guy....that one was a tough one for myself and many, many others.

Pedro had a friend who fell off the cliffs at Moab, in the middle of the night he went to the bathroom and went the wrong way. Which is easy to do in red rock country, even in the day time. His friends used the GPS system to tel 911 where to come.
