Couple fights to name baby 'Metallica'

Quote:
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Metallica may be a cool name for a heavy metal band, but a Swedish couple is struggling to convince officials it is also suitable for a baby girl.

Michael and Karolina Tomaro are locked in a court battle with Swedish authorities, which rejected their application to name their six-month-old child after the legendary rock band.

"It suits her," Karolina Tomaro, 27, said Tuesday of the name. "She's decisive and she knows what she wants."

Although little Metallica has already been baptized, the Swedish National Tax Board refused to register the name, saying it was associated with both the rock group and the word "metal."

Tomaro said the official handling the case also called the name "ugly."

The couple was backed by the County Administrative Court in Goteborg, which ruled on March 13 that there was no reason to block the name. It also noted that there already is a woman in Sweden with Metallica as a middle name.

The tax agency appealed to a higher court, frustrating the family's foreign travel plans.

"We've had to cancel trips and can't get anywhere because we can't get her a passport without an approved name," Tomaro said.
I love Metallica but I would never name my child after them.

Sure, it's a god-awful name, but who's the Swedish gov't to tell these two what they can and cannot name their child.

It is like modified socialism up there, the gov't pays you to have kids, anything bad for you is expensive (booze especially). I can totally see them getting involved in this.

Slayer would have been a better choice...

or realistically, Kerry King Tomaro would have worked out very well.

Metallica? I thought all the Sweds loved ABBA. THAT would be a cool name.
Guess it was taken, along with all the other cool names like Night Ranger, Men Without Hats and Crowded House.
If I ever have a kids, the boy will be called Foghat and the girl Nu Shooz.

Yeah. ABBA.

So, the government should give them the option between Fernando and Chiquitita.

i think there's a rule somewhere that says every Swedish band has to have an ABBA cover...even death metal bands have ABBA covers.

on a side note i actually like ABBA songs when it's not ABBA doing them.

Re: Couple fights to name baby 'Metallica'

Maybe we should be more strict on naming over here...At least on celebrities I mean... letting people name their children Moon Unit and Apple...
