Birthdays- 10/9
Reds:
Steve Gibralter (39) Farmhand who got a brief cup of coffee in the bigs. Others: Fred Patek (67) -"The Flea"- 5'4" tall Joe Pepitone (71) Flake; famous because he was a Yankee. Joe Sewell -Rushed to the bigs after Ray Chapman was killed, he built a Hall of Fame career. Struck out an average of only ten times per season. The anti-Drew Stubbs. Rube Marquard -HOF pitcher who's interviewed in Glory of Their Times. Charles "Victory" Faust -John McGraw' good luck charm in 1911; not a real player.

Re: Birthdays- 10/9
Patek was always one of my favorite non Reds. I'm not even sure he was 5-4. He was really small. Could have been a good jockey.

Re: Birthdays- 10/9
Mickey Haefner was a 30-year-old rookie in 1943 who had a terrific season swinging between starting and relieving. After the war, however, the real ballplayers came home and reality set in...
