Now that the draft is over

The signings begin. And as every team is going through this, a shrewd GM might be looking to add a few non-drafted FA's to the minor leagues.

Matt Harrington seems to have turned it around in Ft. Worth.
Code:
PITCHER W-L ERA G GS CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR HB BB SO WP OPP. AVG
Harrington, Matt 0- 0 1.32 8 0 0 0 0 13.2 7 2 2 1 0 5 16 0 .156
Low risk high reward. He's had a lot of growing up to do, plus the Reds have a bit of a connection to the Cats, Sparky Anderson played there. Not that it would help, but it was interesting.

I think he could pitch right now in either high A or AA.

Re: Now that the draft is over

Maybe, but from what I have read, he is barely touching the high 80s with his fastball...

Re: Now that the draft is over

How old is he now, 22?, 23?, 24?, 25?

If he's on the younger side of those numbers, I might take a chance on him.

Re: Now that the draft is over

He's 24. And he has more k's than IP.

Worth a flyer IMO.

his ship and that $4M+ bonus sailed a long time ago. I highly doubt anyone signs a 24 year reliever from an indy league.

The Reds actually drafted him back in 2003, IIRC.

Re: Now that the draft is over

They did, and I think he was largely immature at the time.

a couple of years can be all the difference. BTW the Reds once signed Brett Gray out of the Northern league based on a 25k game he pitched.

just sayin' guys with a .90 WHIP and better than a K an inning are worth a flyer on.

Re: Now that the draft is over

I would rather sign the 24-year old Harrington than the 24-year old 10th round pick, Roenicke.

He cannot be any worse than Double Zero.

Re: Now that the draft is over

Jeremy Schmidt, James Avery, Brock Till, Wayne Lundgren.

fodder all. Harrington MIGHT be something. it's worth a plane ticket for a scout to see if he has anything left.
