Re: 1964
After making a big run in the last 10 days......
The Phils looked to be in total control (5 game lead I believe) then the Reds swept them in Phillie and the Phils lost a couple of more to somebody else and Reds won some more. The then Phils returned the favor on the Reds by beating the Reds twice in Cincy on the last weekend. The Cards had also moved into the picture but they lost the first 2 of that last weekend to the Mets. So the final day of the season dawned with the Cards and Reds tied for first and the Phils 1 game back. The Cards beat the Mets and the Phils beat the Reds on the last day which made the Cards NL champs and left the Reds and Phils tied 1 game back. |

Re: 1964
Unfortunately, Chico Ruiz is deceased, so the 2006 Reds will have to find someone else to steal home to win a big game down the stretch.
I really do not expect St. Louis to blow the division, but LaRussa certainly does love to constantly tinker with everything, just as Mauch did. I don't see LaRussa using starting pitchers on only a couple of days rest as Mauch did.

Re: 1964
'64 was the first year I was a Reds fan. Geeky 12 yr. old with his white plastic AM radio with Waite Hoyt and Claude Sullivan. And Ed Kennedy and Frank McCormick on WLW-D. What a year to break in on.
What it looks like to me is the Cardinals are the Phillies, the Astros are the Reds, and the Reds are the Cardinals, i.e. in 1964 the Phils had the big lead and blew it, the Reds breathed down their necks that whole collapse, and the Cardinals came out of nowhere and snuck in at the wire.

Click on the Next link to see the Phils lead disappear. The Reds move up and then the Cards make their move.
