Warren Spahn died three years ago..."Spahn, Sain and pray for rain"-it should be raining on the day of Sain's funeral.

Re: RIP Johnny Sain
I am fortunate to have befriended Johnny Sain in the late '80's-early '90's. His daughter Sheryl and grandson Wilson lived nearby and he came to visit them a couple of times a year. I guess he took time to visit occassionally with me because I enjoyed listening to his stories and philosophies. On one visit, he had just been to a card show with Warren Spahn, and he brought me several signed pictures (including the one 62 posted), a cartoon of him engineering a train pulling all the twenty game winners he had produced, and an old Sporting News article. I also have some photographs of him with my oldest son who was probably in the third grade at the time.
Sheryl once told me that she had been told that the Hall of Fame intended to induct him as a coach but planned to wait until after his death. Hmmm...I found that strange logic on their part, but now we will see. I have recently taught one of his nieces. She had kept me informed about his stroke and nursing home life up until recently when she moved onto the high school. Johnny Sain will always be one of my heroes and I am grateful for having been lucky enough to have listened to his stories and talked baseball with him. He and his family will be in my prayers.

Re: RIP Johnny Sain
An innovator in his time when it came to teaching pitching.

Sain hated to run, pitchers loved him for that

He coached the 1968 Tigers staff, so he was the last pitching coach of a 30 game winner. Code:

Re: RIP Johnny Sain
Yes he was. Also, he invented the pitch-back and that ball with the various grips marked in colors.

Re: RIP Johnny Sain
BTW Sains best season in RSAA (Runs Saved Above Average) was in 1948, 45.
