OJ Mayo ejected, "knocks down" ref

http://www.wsaz.com/hhsdreamteam/headlines/5380896.html

That page has the video to it. T'd up once for delay of game (held the ball as he walked up the court after a big dunk), and then the second time for staring at an opposing player (horrible call). Since when are you not allowed to stare at someone? Then he pleads his case to the referee, barely touches the ref, and the ref makes a HUGE flop. Weird... he is suspended 2 games for being ejected, and who knows what will happen for "knocking down" the referee....

what do you guys think? bad call and bad flop?

Based upon the video, bad call, bad flop, bad ref. You can't hear what Mayo or anyone else said on the video, but it sure appears as if the referee had a chip on his shoulder and had decided to show Mayo who was "boss." Unless Mayo was cursing the opposing players while they were merely saying "You're the man, O.J., " I do not understand how Mayo got a second technical while nothing was called on the opposition.

Agreed, but it was obvious from the tape that the ref crossed paths with Mayo and then flopped. Now the initial bump could have been considered legit, but there were numerous other players brushing shoulders with referees too.

I'm not saying the referees were looking for an excuse to toss Mayo, but some refs are better then others. Umpires are the same way. Some of them love the attention. Theres one guy in the Ohio High School Circuit that calls pitches as loud as he can while telling the batter where the pitch actually was.

Instead of "strikkkkkkeeee one". It's "strikkkkkkkkkeeeeeeee that ball was on the inside corner right at the knee number 7." EVERY SINGLE TIME! Then when its a ball he doesnt say anything! Talk about distracting for players! He must have pictures of somebodys daughter.

The ref basically dove to the ground when Mayo approached him, that was awful

Re: OJ Mayo ejected, "knocks down" ref

Not sure of what might have been said during the action between Mayo and the opposing team, but being a bigger man is always the best solution. If Mayo had ignored it and just outplayed them (which we know he can do), then the matter would have never gotten to the referee flop thing. If the others were talking smack, then point to the scoreboard or ignore it. Giving the staredown is asking for trouble and might be perceived as bad sportsmanship (which is probably why he got the T). Of course Mayo is a teenager and perhaps not being a man is the reason he chose the method of retaliation for whatever was said. I hope he learned a lesson and decides the best retaliation for smack is to beat the smack-talkers on the court.

That ref who flopped? That was a joke. But O.J. needs to also learn that you always show respect (or just walk away) to the zebras regardless of the call. There is never a flop if you do not come near the referee.

That's ridiculous. The Ref basically big leagued him. He should've been suspended for the ridiculous "foul" call and then the flop.

It didn't even look like Mayo touched the guy at all. After watching the video twice I also can't really see what he got T'ed up for either.

OJ & Patterson were in bad foul trouble the entire game even though they've never fouled out of a game this year.. hmm.. coincidence?

Re: OJ Mayo ejected, "knocks down" ref

based upon the video, I think he got what he deserved. He chose to hold the ball after his great play, he chose to stop and confront the other team, he even came back again and then went after the referee after the 2nd T. Flop or no flop, horrible calls or not, he needs to be ready to face adversity, react appropriately and face the consequences when he doesn't....there's more coming

Re: OJ Mayo ejected, "knocks down" ref

The 1st T was legit obviously. The 2nd one was just that ref waiting to have any type of reason to toss Mayo. If you watch him throughout the whole video the ref who tosses him and then flops worse than Shane Battier never takes his eye off Mayo.

I think the funniest part is how Mayo's entourage comes storming on the court to escort him off. That was funny.

Re: OJ Mayo ejected, "knocks down" ref

Mayo has to acquire better maturity than all that garbage he did.

Holding the ball was dumb. After that T, he should have gone back to the bench and talked to his coach. The second T was the refs trying to keep a riot from breaking out. And then flop or no flop, he shouldn't have been within 50 ft. of that ref. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I've got a neighbor hoops ref friend that did a couple NCH games and he said he's never seen poorer sports in all his life when NCH was blowing out yet another team.

Mayo wore out his welcome at NCH and Ohio HS basketball. Looks like he is well on his way in W Va.

With all respect, I've watched a few of the HHS games. I haven't observed the Highlander players being any worse sports than any other team that has blown out opponents.
Mayo certainly hasn't worn out his welcome in West Virginia; he may have in parts of Kanawha County, some of whose residents do not take kindly to not having the best of everything in the state.
By the way, I do not live in Cabell County, none of my family has ever attended Huntington High School, and I generally root against HHS in sports.
