Yeah - when I saw a horse just coming on strong I figured that was the eventual winner, but I was shocked when it was Street Sense, just a few seconds after the broadcaster noted that he was 19th and trailing.

My picks were, once again, pure genius this year.

Re: Annual Kentucky Derby Picks

My horse stunk: ! It's OK though as long as there was no money involved

Honestly, I love watching the race every year no matter who wins. Not sure I would ever really put money down only because I don't know much about it. They are beautiful animals just to watch!

19th sounds terrible but in distance terms he wasn't all that far back for a stretch-running horse. Most Derby winners don't come from that many places behind, though, if for no other reason than the difficulty of getting a clean shot through traffic. He got a perfect ride from a jock that knows every inch of that track.

I have a lot of respect for Hard Spun also. It takes a quality horse to set an honest pace and then not collapse when confronted with the long stretch run, and that's the type of horse that sometimes won't be caught at the Preakness with the shorter distance and tight turns. He'll have the hometown jockey advantage there, too.
