What exactly is "extended spring training"?
Seems when someone comes off of an injury, they get sent down to Florida to get "extended Spring training". Somehow they pitch inning's and stuff - what is this? Is there like some phantom vagabond team down there stuck in limbo since March that is in a perpetual never ending world of spring training?

Re: What exactly is "extended spring training"?
Players rehabilitating injuries, plus those awaiting their Class A seasons to begin, constitute the lineups for "extended spring training."
Games are played between various teams, but they usually take place on practice fields, not the main ballparks used for Cactus League games. |

Ah okay. I thought it was some fantasyland where random teams meet and continue spring training for the year. In that league, the Reds would be first in the division. |

Re: What exactly is "extended spring training"?
HHF had a good reply - plus a lot of times they aren't really "games" in the truest sense of the word - the clubs set up bizarre situations. Like if they want a guy to get some at bats in, they may have him bat first every inning. Or they may allow 5 outs in an inning to get the D some work in.
I went to one of the Angels one a couple of years ago and they had a pitcher bat first three innings straight and he bunted every time. |

Re: What exactly is "extended spring training"?
Sometimes extended spring training involves simulated games throwing off the mound to one or two hitters. There is no game at all. the coaches will set up situations to have the pitcher pitch to or the hitter hit to -- it all involves them just getting some work in. I think that is what Billy Bray is doing right now.
