Wheeler: Long-time Fan Stands up for The Schnoz
Interesting column about Ernie Lombardi and a long-time fan.

That's a good article but one thing stikes me as peculiar.

A quaint tale of a plucky urchin blackmailing a professional athlete about his tomcatting ways.
These days the tyke will sell his cellphone camera photo to the New York Post. |

So which is more impressive, Ernie with seven packs of smokes or Johnny with seven baseballs?

Re: Wheeler: Long-time Fan Stands up for The Schnoz
I was killin' some time in a library many years ago and I picked up a book that listed the best players by position. Didn't have much time, as my wife was already checking out, so I looked up catcher. Felt pretty sure Bench would lead the way. Well I wasn't disapointed. Johnny Bench was # 1, Yogi Berra was #2 and, Ta Da, Ernie Lombardi third. Two outa three. Can't beat that.
Sorry to hear that Bucky Walters failed to cover home. Walters was my favorite Red back then. He could pitch, won 27 one year, and he could hit. One game in the 1940 Series, game six, he pitched a 4-0 shutout and in the eight inning hit a home run.
