They had this in the Dayton paper the other day. The Reds all time record is 9208-9161.

Wow. I knew they were way up there in all-time losses. Unloveable losers, sometimes I think it's amazing that they're the team that survived in Philly and the A's were the ones that moved.

Is that counting back to 1882 or 1876?

Re: Phillies lose 10,000th

Baseball Reference has their record from 1882-2007 as 9637-9341 (not sure where the descrepancy is between them and DDN - but I am more likely to go with baseballreference).
If we add the brutally bad 1876-1880 period of 125-217, we get 9762-9558.

Pretty good, actually, considering we have not had a winning record since 2000.

Thanks! I think I would go with the baseballreference.com figures.

Maybe DDN was only going back to 1890 or '91, whenever the Reds re-entered the National League.

The writer said it was going back to 1876 but if baseball reference has it different I am sure the writer had to make an error somewhere.

While you can find an endless array of fascinating statistics, on this web site in other places, for the teams, the number that eventually mean the most are team wins and losses. And no team in baseball history has lost quite like the Philadelphia Phillies—they are just one defeat away from becoming the first major league franchise to reach 10,000 losses, as they have an all-time record of 8,810-9,999.

Though the Phillies have tried to put off the milestone as long as possible by beating the Cardinals in their first two games after the All-Star break, it’s still represents a lot of losing, as both the Philadelphia Daily News’ Paul Hagen and Philadelphia Inquirer’s Frank Fitzpatrick have noted. Hagen points out that the Phillies would need 32 consecutive 100-win seasons to get up to .500, while Fitzpatrick notes the Phillies would need to win 1,189 straight games to reach the break-even point. The official response? “It is mind-boggling,” Larry Shenk, the Phillies’ vice president for public relations, told the Inquirer. “But it’s what it is. We’ll take it and move on.”

One distinction the Phillies may lose in 2009 is the all-time record for consecutive losing seasons, which they set with 16 from 1933-48. Pittsburgh is at 14 and counting, as the Pirates are 40-50 and seem to be a lock for another sub-.500 finish this year.

Re: Phillies lose 10,000th

For the era I've followed NL baseball (1964-present), I've always thought the Phillies were a pretty good ball club.

Just eyeballing baseball-reference, that stretch between 1918-1948 was absolutely brutal for the Phils. That's a long daggone time to play horrible baseball. I can understand the origins of the boo-birds.

Yep, the worst run in the history, fraught with goats as lawnmowers, a crumbling stadium and the worse pitching ever.

I wrote a piece on the worst run of bad seasons in the history of the game and they are the studs of the stable
