Re: Davey Johnson on Sports Talk....

He has worked his way to a zero golf handicap.

Doesn't sound like a guy who's looking for a manager gig.

Reds don't need a manager, they have Pete

Re: Davey Johnson on Sports Talk....

He says that the Reds should look internally for their next manager.

Strike two for those of us who'd like to see him as the next Reds skipper.

Davey says he would listen if the Reds called him about the manager gig, but reiterated that the Reds should look internally.

Re: Davey Johnson on Sports Talk....

- Still does a little work for the Nationals

- Olympic coaching

- Says MacKanin is doing a great job so far.

- Talks about how communicating with his players allows him to get to know them, and what buttons to push to get the most out of them.

- Feels a manager has to be honest to gain respect. He says he was probably too honest at times in his career with upper management.

- Feels the Reds need continuity at the manager posision...they should look in there system first (we've been there, Davey )

- Says he would listen if the Reds called him about the job. He says under Marge there were some trying times, and some difficulty, but would listen if the new ownership wanted to talk. He says he was forced to hire Ray Knight as his "assistant manger" by Marge Schott, which was a first for him.

- He enjoys coaching USA baseball, because he gets to pick and build a team he wants. He likes the hands on approach he has now. It's not like that so much in the big leagues.

To me, it sounds like he's happy in his current situation, but is always open to conversations...

Re: Davey Johnson on Sports Talk....

IMO, the bottom line of that intervew is that his interest in managing the Reds... or any MLB team, is tepid at best. Since he works for the Nats and was so insistent that clubs should look internally, I suspect he'd rather be their manager.

It's not the same Jim Bowden he once knew

Re: Davey Johnson on Sports Talk....

You guys have to remember Davey Johnson's temperment.

He sounds tepid about most everything. The fact that he said he'd listen if the Reds came to him should speak volumes.

Thing is, I think they'd have to put together a better ballclub first. I'd love to see Wayne make a few good moves, capping them off with a Davey Johnson hiring.

Alas, tis just a dream of mine.

He said he was content being an ex-manager.

Also said he would listen if the Reds called. Sure it's a long shot but I say we give him something to listen to.

Re: Davey Johnson on Sports Talk....

I think he let everyone know what he would need to be a team s manager.

1) He has to pick his entire coaching staff.
2) He wants control over who is on the field.
3) He doesn't want a lot of interference from upstairs.
4) He wants to be able to communicate without his job being held over his head.

With those things on the table and accepted he would talk with anyone who would call.

Re: Davey Johnson on Sports Talk....

If Davey Johnson gets the Reds job I will do backflips, I will be nice to RFS for a whole 6 months, I will not mock Red Leader for bringing up for the upteenth time that he played college baseball at Kent State, I will not make fun of Chip for the multitude of things you can make fun of Chip for, and I will finally stop running and let Creek catch me.

Some would say that is impossible...

And I'd give it a try. But personally, I just don't see him coming back to the Reds for a second fling.

Besides - the fishing is not that great in the Ohio River.

But yeah, I would try.
