minor league recap 7/28

Billings throws up a nifty little 11-spot in the third inning on the way to a 16-3 win. They hit early and often pounding out 18 hits.

Waring, Long, Bartles and Maunus all went deep. Josh Ravin walked six batters in 1 2/3 innings.

Billings is 19-17 on the year.

The GCL Reds posted an 8-4 win on Saturday. Neftali Soto had two more hits raising his season batting average to .330. The whole team had their hitting shoes on as they rack up 12 safeties. DH T. Brown went deep for the fourth time this season. On the pitching side, starter Juan Carlos Rafael pitched five strong frames, lowering his ERA to 2.33 for the campaign. Reliever Josh Beal gives up a hit and a walk in the ninth in between striking out the side. He now has K'd 14 batters in 11 IP. His ERA is a sweet 0.79.

In Midwest League action the Dragons of Dayton whitewash the Puddlesplashers of Peoria 4-0. Stubbs and Cozarts with two hits apiece as Dayton stickmen chop out 10 base knocks.
On the pitching side of things Arneson, Mateo and Geronimo combined to limit Peoria to only four hits. Jamie Arneson has only given up 8 hit in his last four starts (18IP) while striking out a batter an inning. His control has been suspect, however, as he has issued 17 walks in that same stretch.

Moving up the Cincinnati minor league food chain the next stop is Sarasota. Sarasota falls 8-2. The offense was virtually non-existent as they managed only one hit after a two-run blast by Miguel Perez in the second. Rough outing for Daryl Thompson as he gives up 7 runs in 4 1/3 innings. If you're looking for silver linings, he did strike out 6 batters.

Aided by seven walks Chattanooga scores 8 runs on just five hits in an 8-3 win over Huntsville. T. Godwin and C. Cosme both left the yard. The pitching was solid. Starter James Avery gives up 2 runs over 5 innings. The star of Pedro Viola keeps rising as he makes his first appearance in Double A. He celebrates by pitching 2 1/3 perfect frames, striking out two. All aboard the V-Train as this is his second promotion of the season. He started out in Dayton and pitched for about a month or so in Sarasota. His combined ERA for the year is 1.51, and he has struck out 79 sticksters in 65 innings of work.

Did Ravin hire Jason Neighborgall as a personal pitching coach this offseason? I expected a whole lot more from him this year.

It's nice to see a Miguel Perez sighting. He has precious little time to iron out that offensive game or he's done. I hate that because he has some defensive talent.
