Re: heath bell would have saved the reds
I think there are several guys out there that could have saved a lot of games for the reds. Just need guys that can miss bats coming out of the bullpen.

it'd be great having a guy like peavy to go along with Harang and Arroyo.

Re: heath bell would have saved the reds
Yes he would, but the Brewers had to give up three good prospects, to get Scott Linebrick who had lost his job to Bell. The Red Sox traded their #4 starter and two top ten prospects to get Gagne. Bell would have been very, very expensive, and not worth it in the long run.

Re: heath bell would have saved the reds
The thing about Bell is I think the Mets passed him through waivers a couple times at different times to outright him to AAA before eventually trading him to San Diego. I recall thinking that he'd be a great target for the Reds, alongside Royce Ring (who was also traded to the Padres by the Mets), and I know there were others on here that advocated trading for him as well.

Re: heath bell would have saved the reds
Padres haven't done that. They have the best pen in the NL, maybe the Majors, but 5 out of the 6 relievers used tonight were products of other organizations. That is what great scouting will do for you.

Re: heath bell would have saved the reds
But were any of them huge trades. Arent most of their guys waiver type trades. Trades im talking about that I dont want to see are the Kearns and Lopez type.

Re: heath bell would have saved the reds
Its a lot of guess work but Wayne needs to translate his position player judging skills and translate that crap into pitcher judging.

Anybody who wins or saves games is in the end worth what you pay for them, especially in a mediocre division like the NL Central. For all their struggles this year the Reds were 1 reliable 8th inning pitcher from being a divisional contender. Even if they had gotten such a guy as late as the AllStar break, they probably would be even with or ahead of the Cardinals right now which means with all the games the Reds have remaining with the Brewers and Cubs, they still would have had a shot. The problem lies in having the 20-20 foresight to know who the winners and savers are going to be. |
