Free agents
Hey, here's a list of free agents.
Anyone you like? Who are the real "sleeper" guys out there? Who do you think we'll get? Let's try to keep it free of ridicule until page 3!

Re: Free agents
Do you think Affeldt would be better than Bray and Cooter?

Re: Free agents
The guy I would want to see the reds make a run at is Jennings. I know he has been hurt this year and has a bad year but the guy had a huge upside in colorado and had actually pitched pretty well there last year. The Astro's thought a lot of him giving up what they did.

Re: Free agents
As of now i'd look at Wade Miller, Joe Kennedy, and Tomo Ohka.. sign them through the rest of the year and hope they eat some innings..

Re: Free agents
I would go after Francisco Cordero, Eric Gagne, Scott Linebrink, and Mariano Rivera. They would be very expensive of course. These are the guys that every team will go after, which means they will end up in New York, Boston, Chicago or Los Angeles instead of Cincinnati.
I chose to only mention guys whose club's don't hold an option. If they are any good their club will pick up the option given how scarce quality pitching is around the league. The list of free agents is not very good at all. It is depressing actually. If anybody still thinks it might be a good idea to ditch Adam Dunn so we can spend his money on these chumps, you might want to reconsider. |

Re: Free agents
While a lot of those pitchers on that list aren't exactly sexy, many of them would be an upgrade over our current situation.

I also agree that at least one high caliber reliever is needed. Gagne has been too iffy for his cost though and as you say he won't likely agree to come here. Neither will Rivera. Linebrink is scary. His K/9 really dropped and he has some fly ball tendencies that lead me to believe that the park in SD had a lot to do with his success. His away ERAs in 2005 and 2006 are reasonable and don't support the contention that the park was a huge factor, but his BABIP on the Road was .198 in 2005 and a still low .278 in 2006. His FIP for 2007 is 5.58 and I think GABP would be a poor fit. All signs point to a guy ready to take a steep fall in performance and I'd let some one else pay for that. I Like the idea of Cordero and he'd be on my short list. Another option might be Joe Nathan. He has a 2008 option for $6 Million. There has been talk that Minnesota just might let him walk and let the younger arms take over (Neshek, Crain, Morlan, etc.) - saving that money to try and re-up Santana and Hunter. If so, his past with Krivsky may give the Reds a shot. In this market the Twins should probably invoke the option and try for a trade, but he'd be my top target if he hits the market. Cordero is my second choice. With Livigston's injury, the Reds probably need to bring in at least one starter (they probably needed to anyway). There are no top guys and the middle guys will just cost too much. I wouldn't give out any Milton type deals which is what some of these suspects (Lohse, Silva, Wolf, etc.) will probably get. Maybe the Reds should go cheap and bring in some more guys like Victor Santos was in 2007. They could get a head start with Fossum, Tomko, Kennedy and Kim all available right now. They may need these guys to get through the year. Tomko has an FIP of 4.58. Sadly, he'd be the number 3 on this staff.

Re: Free agents
I have to say that the list of starting pitchers possibly available doesn't look promising. Not much at all really stands out to me.

I gleaned this from ESPN Insider on that deal.... Scott Linebrink, RP, MIL One of baseball's elite relievers since 2004, Linebrink has been on the trade market for a couple of years now. The Padres finally shipped him out to the Brewers, who already have closer Francisco Cordero. Can he keep up his production in new surroundings? Adam: Unreal. The scariest Linebrink stats one can bring up are his home and away splits for this season: a 2.10 ERA and 0.90 WHIP at home, but a bloated 5.75 ERA and 1.62 WHIP on the road. Linebrink is a fly ball pitcher, and as we have seen with Chris Young this season, there might not be a more favorable place than Petco for a fly ball pitcher to pitch. The turnover rate for relievers is quite high, and Linebrink already has showed some signs of decline -- his strikeout rate is absurdly low (5.0 K/9). Quite honestly, Linebrink might be about to blow, and it looks like a great idea to sell him off to another team before that happens. Besides, the Padres have a new Linebrink anyway in Heath Bell. Will: Unreal. Adam has hit this one on the head. Petco has masked Linebrink's real 2007, the one in which his control, home run rate and especially strikeout rate have slipped considerably. Unless he has been hiding an injury, there is evidence of serious skills decline here. Linebrink's home run percentage on fly balls might be artificially high, but there's no visible excuse for the lack of strikeouts. Linebrink's peripherals paint a picture of a reliever who's no more than a shell of his former self. The road numbers Adam quotes above tell the real tale, and this is one trade the Brewers probably are going to regret.

Re: Free agents
I have no idea who Koji Uehara is, but I think he looks like the best option amongst the starting pitchers.
