per mlbtraderumors.com...Randy Wolf will not have his option picked up
its reported that Randy Wolf will not have his option picked up by the dodgers..
"The Dodgers will pass on options for Ramon Martinez and Randy Wolf, but might consider Mike Lieberthal at $1.5MM. Liebs could earn almost $40K per game next year, not too shabby." think the Reds should take a look?? |

A healthy Wolf possibly but I'm not sure I would give him a guaranteed deal.
Of course, someone will give him a 3 year deal for 6 Million a year just because he is left handed.

I'd definatly be interested, but Wolf probably will stay out west.

If he's healthy, I think Wolf is exactly the type of pitcher the Reds should target.

Randy Wolf isn't the answer to make the postseason in 2008.
Or 2009. Or 2010. |

We've targeted pitchers like this for years trying to catch another Pete Schourek. Other than Jimmy Haynes costing FCB his firstborn, they haven't really worked out. Maybe we ought NOT target the type of pitcher that is Randy Wolfe.

Re: per mlbtraderumors.com...Randy Wolf will not have his option picked up
Wait a minute... how is Randy Wolf like Pete Schourek or Jimmy Haynes? I seem to recall Wolf having much more of a track record for success, but maybe I'm missing something there.
We have two solid RHP at the top of our rotation for the next several years. We need a third pitcher, ideally a LHP, to slot in there regardless of whether Bailey and Cueto (both RHP as well) develop to expectations. I don't see any LHP in the pipeline who look like they could slot in at that #3 level that we need. Last I checked, Randy Wolf was a guy who put up a consistent 4 to 4.5 ERA, missed a fair amount of bats, and threw with his left hand. He may not be healthy right now, but if he checks out with doctors and we can get him for a fair contract, what's not to like?

Re: per mlbtraderumors.com...Randy Wolf will not have his option picked up
He's coming off 3 straight years of injury. His latest injury resulted in shoulder surgery. That's a death knell for a pitcher and is not a gamble the Reds ought to be taking with their (somewhat) limited resources. I'm not saying we shouldn't try to sign him to like a 1-year $500,000 contract, but my guess is he'll go for a lot more than that, being left handed and having a bit of a track record of success, as you say.

that pretty well covers it. Reds should stay away from pitchers whose likely attrition rate is going to be high.

Re: per mlbtraderumors.com...Randy Wolf will not have his option picked up
If he's out there and healthy I would probably take a chance on him. Thing that really really worries me is staying healthy.. since 2003 he hasn't put up 200 innings.
Innings Pitched: 2004: 136.2 2005: 80 2006: 56.2 2007: 102.2 In the last four years Wolf is: 24W - 18L / 66 Games / 4.62 ERA / 288 K's Average per season: 6W - 5L* / 17 Games* / 4.62 ERA / 72 K's *.5 on Loses and Games rounded up I could see an incentive based contract with games and innings pitched being huge incentives.

Re: per mlbtraderumors.com...Randy Wolf will not have his option picked up
If we're going to give a guy coming back from surgery an incentive-laded deal, I'd rather go after Mark Prior. Handedness for starting pitchers is overrated.

Re: per mlbtraderumors.com...Randy Wolf will not have his option picked up
with his track record the odds on him staying healthy in 2008 are not good.
