This can't be true.

I can't believe the Reds would mess up this badly--I think this may be some ESPN nonsense. Fay seems to say the source is the Reds, but he also claims no one has talked to him on the subject and the ESPN article does not say the info comes from a club source. Butcher, Castellini, and Krivsky are all saying nothing, yet they know it is a 3-year deal? Sounds like this all could be bogus. I would not be surprised to see it all quashed tomorrow.

Baker works for ESPN.

Re: This can't be true.

I'd say you're hoping against hope here, Wheelhouse. They all denied the 3 year deal for A-Gon last year when ESPN leaked it but he's our shortstop and Dusty will be our manager.

Re: This can't be true.

Also, we know numerous people, including our current GM, who have left meetings with the Reds and thought they had jobs when they didn't. And we know how reporters can get fooled.

Not speaking about the facts of the hire here, but the Reds FO is about the least involved club with their site. Seriously. If this were the Mariners, Mets, Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers or Astros, I would tend to agree with you here. If it's not marketing related, the Reds are as hands-off as is possible (unfortunately).

Re: This can't be true.

This seems a bit more definitive. Sorry, Wheelhouse.

Reds to hire Baker as skipper
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- The Reds have chosen Dusty Baker as their new manager and have signed him to a three-year contract, the club announced on Sunday.

Baker, currently an ESPN baseball analyst, has 14 seasons of managerial experience with the Giants (1993-2002) and Cubs (2003-06) and is a three-time National League Manager of the Year. He will remain with ESPN until the end of the postseason.

The Reds are expected to formally introduce Baker during a press conference on Monday.

General manager Wayne Krivsky could not be reached for comment.

Baker, who owns a 1,162-1,041 career record as a skipper, will become the first African-American manager in Reds history. The 58-year-old reached the World Series with the Giants in 2002 and was let go as Cubs manager after his team went 66-96 during the 2006 season.

Cincinnati selected Baker over interim manager Pete Mackanin, who posted a 41-39 record after Jerry Narron was dismissed on July 1.

Throughout the search, Krivsky has refused to name candidates other than Mackanin, who was an advanced scout before taking over the club. It was not known what role Mackanin will have going forward.

Mark Sheldon is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

I'm sorry, but this still seems bizarre. If the club announced it, why wouldn't it be Butcher doing it, and why is it written that the club is "expected" to announce it in a presser Monday. If the club announced it, wouldn't they know for sure when the press conference is? Weird. Let me dream for a minute here--what if the Reds are bluffing?

On a separate subject, Mackannin is an "advance scout," not an "advanced scout."
