Wow...4.35 million isn't a fortune?

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?
Exactly my thoughts...I understand this is MLB and money is thrown everywhere...but WOW, when a guy makes a million, even league minimum a year and it isn't looked at as "a fortune" sort of says something.

38 HRs allowed in '06 worries the H-E-double hockey sticks out of me.
When's the last time Cincy had 2 40 HR guys on the same team? ![]() No thanks...I don't see him being what they need. |

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?
I love it. "Best fit" = Had a 4.19 ERA last year in Minnesota. Great logic. Would that make him a great fit everywhere/

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?
I think the Reds would be better suited at going after the highlighted below:
Left Handed Starters: Jeremy Affeldt (28) Bruce Chen (30) Shawn Estes (34) Casey Fossum (29) Tom Glavine (41) Eric Milton (32) Odalis Perez (30) Mark Redman (33) Kenny Rogers (42) Glendon Rusch (32) David Wells (44) Randy Wolf (31) Right Handed Starters: Tony Armas (29) Pedro Astacio (37) Kris Benson (32) Shawn Chacon (29) Roger Clemens (45) Matt Clement (33) Bartolo Colon (34) Scott Elarton (31) Josh Fogg (30) Freddy Garcia (31) Livan Hernandez (32) Jason Jennings (29) Jason Johnson (34) Kenshin Kawakami (32) Hiroki Kuroda (32) Brian Lawrence (31) Kyle Lohse (29) Rodrigo Lopez (31) Joe Mays (31) Wade Miller (31) Brian Moehler (35) Tomo Ohka (31) Ramon Ortiz (34) Russ Ortiz (33) Chan Ho Park (34) Sidney Ponson (31) Curt Schilling (40) Aaron Sele (37) Naoyuki Shimizu (31) Carlos Silva (28) John Thomson (34) Brett Tomko (34) Steve Trachsel (37) Koji Uehara (32) John Wasdin (35) Jeff Weaver (31) Kip Wells (30) Paul Wilson (34) Jamey Wright (32) Jaret Wright (31) Victor Zambrano (32)

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?
Silva's low rate of strikeouts per nine innings pitches scares me.

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?
I'm not sure what was wrong with Silva in 2006, but I believe he was hurting. He has been improving. If you throw out 2006 and the first half of 2007, you will see he has been a pretty decent pitcher. His 2006 may bring his price tag down and make him a good gamble.

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?
Silva would have to be awfully cheap to get my interest.
Free Agent Pitchers that could be decent pick-ups if the price is right. Starters Jon Leiber Jason Jennings Relievers Jeremy Affeldt Kerry Wood Francisco Cordero I wouldn't go nuts on any of them and probably the market would be more than the team should pay. The one I'd pay the most for is Wood at this point. They all would have to pass an extensive physical or no deal. The Reds need to deal a bat or two for starter help. Most of the guys on the list are no better than Belisle.

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?
I realize this isn't particulrly helpful, but, Livan Hernandez is only 32 years old?

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?
Since the Reds have Arroyo and Harang and several good young potential starters, aren't they better off with a top pitcher late in his career for one or two years? Schilling would be ideal. Possibly even Glavine who always pitched well in Cincy? Instead of a four year deal for a guy like Silva? Not sure I know the answer, but my instinct would be to pay Schilling $12 million for one or two years or Glavine $8 million for a year.
