Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?

Silva? Didn't we have Kyle Lohse? So how is Silva much better than Lohse?

If this is all we have to choose in free agency I think the Reds should pass.

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?

I wouldn't mind Silva. The way the FA market is going $10M doesn't buy you that much anymore. Also would he be that bad of a #3 to #4 starter? Two other pitchers I would like to see the reds take a run are are Jennings (but I heard he may be out for the season) and Schilling.

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?

Given the type of money these guys are going to command, I would take my chances with Harang, Arroyo, Bailey, Belisle and Maloney or someone else in our system before I ink someone to a 4 year, 40 million + contract....

that pretty much nails. If the Reds pay him, they they will likely get the same level of performance out of ~2M.

He reminds me of Kyle Loshe.

Who knows if that is good or bad? Sometimes it would be good, and sometimes bad.

I'm afraid of the bad far outweighing the good.

Silva yuck. Belisle will give us more in 2008 than Silva would, imo.

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?

I might kick the tires on Lieber. He's a groundball pitcher. Pitched only 70+ innings last year due to non-arm related injuries. If he would come cheap with an incentive based 1-year + team option contract, he could eat some innings on the back end of the rotation. Downside is that he's 38 and wasn't all that effective last year in Philly, when healthy.

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?

Silva looks like he's going to be phenomenally overpriced this offseason, which should have the side benefit of taking the Reds out of the running.

Re: Carlos Silva: Best Fit For Reds?

Silva Fact.

He's the only starting pitcher in MLB history to pitch a whole season with less the 1/2 a walk every 9 innings, if you include relievers and limit the IP to 20 IP at least only Ecks 1989 and 1990 are on the list with Silva.

Code:
HITS/9 IP YEAR H/9 IP SO/9 IP BB/9 IP RSAA IP
1 Dennis Eckersley 1989 4.99 8.58 0.47 15 57.2
2 Dennis Eckersley 1990 5.03 8.96 0.49 23 73.1
3 Carlos Silva 2005 10.13 3.39 0.43 20 188.1
