White Sox to Offer Largest Deal in Team History to Torii Hunter?
ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago's Bruce Levine has been saying that the White Sox are prepared to offer the largest deal in team history to free agent center fielder Torii Hunter. The deal would be five years at $15m per year.

Lots of money for a guy who isn't even an average defender in CF anymore....

I don't think it's that bad...Damon got $13 million per, didn't he? Hunter is a much better fielder and had a .500 SLG last season.
I think that is a decent price. |

And just fielding the ball wise (not taking into account throwing arms) Damon gets to quite a bit more baseballs than Torii Hunter does these days.

It was reported awhile back that 5/75 was the minimum Hunter would accept.

... is that a reasonable expectation moving forward?

Re: White Sox to Offer Largest Deal in Team History to Torii Hunter?
which was the point. Now that he will be moving into his mid 30 is it reasonable to expect a SLG% anywhere near .500?
Is it a good idea to be paying a CF ~15M a year for a 750-770 OPS?

Not unless he is going to be Andruw Jones in the field for those years, every year and be saving 20-25 runs a year.

Talent has become so scarce on the free agent market that well past their prime players are getting ridiculous contracts. It's why the Reds should stay out of the high to mid free agent market.

I don't know, but it would be more valuable than what Hunter is going to bring to the table....

Re: White Sox to Offer Largest Deal in Team History to Torii Hunter?
Another offseason is upon us, as we laugh at all the other teams paying crazy amounts of money for the better FAs. I can't wait for the smarter FA signings that Wayne is known for. The Stantons and Gonzalezes. Those are the smart moves.
Just because you think that a contract is "bad" doesn't make it such. Damon makes $13 million? It's called market value. This board was in hysterics last season when Meche, Lilly and Marquis were signed. We got Lohse and Stanton. Sweet. If the market says Hunter is worth that much, then that's what he's worth. I think our perception is skewed because the Reds are one of the teams who think people are worth 2002 salaries. Times have changed. $15 million isn't that much when you want to win. The Reds don't allocate a ton of money to the intl FA market. The Reds don't get involved in the mid to high FA market. Wow...this is friggin scary. |
