Braves appear close to signing Glavine

Tom Glavine's anticipated reunion with the Braves could be finalized quickly, the veteran pitcher's representative said Saturday after negotiations brought the sides close to an agreement on what's likely to be a one-year contract worth about $8 million.

"I think it's a pretty good chance" it will be finalized soon, agent Gregg Clifton said late Saturday. "We made a lot of progress."

The 41-year-old left-hander is a 303-game winner who spent 16 seasons with the Braves before going to the Mets in 2003. He won 242 games and two Cy Young Awards as a member of the Braves.

The longtime Alpharetta resident declined a $13 million option to return for a sixth season with the Mets in 2008, expressing a desire to finish his career in Atlanta where he could live at home with his wife and four children during the school year.

$8 Million is a lot for a sign and retire.

Unless your name is Roger Clemens...

Last year: Clemens will make a prorated share of $28 million this year, or roughly $4.5 million per month.

Well, he turned down $13M from the Mets, and could have gotten similiar money elswehere. $8M for Glavine (with only 1 year of risk) is a bargain by todays standard.

The Braves had to know the Mets would offer Tom Glavine arbitration — everyone knew Glavine already declined a $13 million option to return to the Mets, so there was no reason for the Mets to think Glavine would accept arbitration, which would’ve resulted in a salary below $13 million. The Mets would’ve loved for him to do that — they wanted him back, and are scrambling now for a replacement.

So instead of waiting for the formality of the Mets offering arbitration on Saturday, the Braves went ahead and signed Glavine last week to a one-year, $8 million contract. By doing so, the Braves gave up their first-round draft pick (No. 18 overall) to the Mets, who also will get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds for losing Glavine.

Just so we’re clear, since several folks have asked me: You need to understand there was no way, no reason, for the Braves to think the Mets wouldn’t offer him arbitration, and absolutely no reason for the Mets not to offer it, since they wanted Glavine back and since his salary through arbitration would likely have been less than his salary through the option he declined.

Also, Glavine made it pretty clear to those close to him that he wanted to either pitch for the Braves or retire.

It’s a familiar refrain, this time from south of the border: Mike Hampton is hurt again.

The Braves left-hander injured his right hamstring in the first inning of his first start in the Mexican Winter League last week. He left after one inning, and it’s uncertain if he’ll pitch again this winter.

“We don’t know when he’ll come back [in winter ball], if at all,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said. “There’s only four weeks left in the season, and hamstring injuries usually take a while.”

Hampton, 35, has missed the past two seasons recovering from elbow surgeries on his pitching arm, and the Braves hoped he could make seven starts in Mexico to better gauge the likelihood of having him back in Atlanta’s starting rotation for the 2008

Anyone know if Colorado is still paying Hampton's salary? I think they are.

According to Cot's, it's almost a "who's on first" scenario...

Quote:
$20M signing bonus
$1M to charity, $19M deferred to 2009-18 at 3% interest

01:$8M, 02:$8.5M, 03:$11M, 04:$12M, 05:$12.5M, 06:$13.5M, 07:$14.5M, 08:$15M, 09:$20M club option $6M buyout

Colorado to pay $49M ($20M signing bonus, $8M in 2001, $8.5M in 2002, $2M in 2003, $2M in 2004, $2.5M in 2005, $6M buyout in 2009).

Florida to pay $23.5M ($7M of 2003 salary, $8M in 2004, $8.5M in 2005).

Atlanta to pay $48.5M ($2M of 2003 salary, $2M in 2004, $1.5M in 2005, $13.5M in 2006, $14.5M in 2007, $15M in 2008).

award bonuses: $0.15M (WS MVP), $0.1M (CY, LCS MVP), $50,000 (2-5 CY vote), $25,000 (All Star, Gold Glove Silver Slugger)
3 years/$12M (1998-2000)
So, Atlanta's on the hook for the bulk this year, but Colorado still has the buyout hanging out there. I don't know how the deferred money is split. That is one ugly contract, even if he'd performed at top form.

Hampton should go on trial for robbery in three states. Yikes, that's one awful contract.

Insurance has covered a lot too, 40-60 percent the last two seasons.

Mike Hampton and Albert Belle, the men who destroyed the insurance fall back position for MLB.
