Cardinals/Brewers discussing a Rolen trade

per rotoworld:

Quote:
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Cardinals and Brewers are discussing a Scott Rolen trade, but they haven't decided how much money St. Louis will pick up or what players the Cards will get in return.

It appears safe to assume that Chris Capuano would be in the deal. The Brewers shouldn't need to give up much more talent in return for Rolen, assuming that they're willing to pay the majority of the $36 million the third baseman is owed for the next three years. If Rolen is acquired, Ryan Braun would move to left field, leaving Matt LaPorta wondering about his future role with the team.

"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."

I think they want to get Braun off of 3B. EdE would be a better fit.

Trading for Rolen is insanity at its best

I hear Kevin Mench maybe also included to sweeten the deal. If that is the case I see the Cards winning that deal.

I would suggest that if the Brewers are willing to take all of Rolen's salary, they shouldn't have to give up anything. In fact, that would still be agreat deal for the Cards.

Would anyone give Rolen a 3 year deal for $36M if he was a FA?

I don't think so.

Doesn't Rolen have 10 & 5 rights?

Yes but he wants out pretty badly alledgedly. He and LaRussa don't get along. Besides he would be foolish to wanna stay w/ St Louis over Milwaukee at this point.

Exactly. This is a win-win situation for the Cards though. They are getting rid of a injury-plagued, high-priced, aging veteran, and freeing up payroll.

I can't believe the Brewers are even considering this unless the Cards are gonna pick up a substantial amount of his contract just to get rid of him.

Apparently that's the thing that's held up the deal, St. Louis won't pay enough to satisfy Milwaukee and I don't know how they could. Mil. needs a 3rd basemen pretty bad but I would go with Feliz everyday over Rolen at this point. Maybe Feliz is asking way too much or is waiting things out to try to get some of the teams that miss out on the bigger fish to have a bidding war for his services.

It's amazing what a couple of years can do to the perception of a player! Rolen is a picture perfect example (along with Junior) of the problems with extreme LTCs.

Re: Cardinals/Brewers discussing a Rolen trade

If the Brew Crew gets him on the cheap and cards pay some of his contract then yes he would be a good "gamble" for the Brewers. Course they can avoid the gamble and take incredibly talented EE for Capuano .
