Reds minor leaguers who became free agents

Via Baseball America

Cincinnati Reds (14)
Righthanders: Rick Asadoorian, Carlos Bohorquez, Dan Denham, Steven Kelly, Elizardo Ramirez, Dushan Ruzic
Catchers: Jean Boscan, Miguel Perez
First baseman: Jesse Gutierrez
Shortstops: Jeff Bannon, Caonabo Cosme, Aaron Herr, Anderson Machado
Outfielder: Marland Williams

If they let Asadoorian or Perez get away, it will be a mistake in my opinion.

I'd like to see Lizard stick around as well. He is still relatively young and coming off an injury plagued year.

I have no problem at all keeping Ramirez either. I think the other two guys could be picked up very quickly though if the Reds don't get them inked quickly.

EZ and Perez should be gotten back. Both have a possible future, and I don't want that future to be with another team. Other than that there are no real big losses here. It wouldn't ruin the Reds to lose these guys. Major League talent should be their first target.

I guess I'm not sure I understand the process here. Was the only way to avoid this to add all three to the 40 man roster? Wasn't EZ already on that? Seems a mistake to me to lose any of these three. I'm assuming the move is just to let this happen, renegotiate and re-sign[?]

I'm assuming there is some period of time after season where Reds can still add them. I agree, Asaadorian and Perez should stay.

Are the Reds at risk at all of losing Carlos Guevara in the Minor League Rule 5 draft?

Yes, they are (unless he's added to the 40-man roster).

I'm pretty sure he will be added though. It would be stupid to let a talent like him go, when pitching is your top priority.

I agree completely. Even if the Reds think he has no chance at being a successful MLB pitcher, he could at least be very valuable in a trade.

Asadoorian has been nabbed by the Dodgers. Too bad, I liked what I saw of him his first full year as a pitcher.

I don't understand why you invest time and money on a guy and then let him get away. I'd think you would have to consider his past season a success considering he competed fairly well in AA. Maybe it was just Asadoorian finding a better situation for himself, but it would have been nice if he had re-signed.

I'd have liked to see us hang on to Asadoorian as well as Perez and EZ, but there are only so many minor league opportunities and you've got to make some judgments about who needs the spots most and how fast people can come along. I suspect it was a combination of those things in Asadoorian's case. That said, Krivsky has been remarkably willing to either lose or pass on potential relief pitching: Medlock, Guevara, F. Hernandez (taken after us in the Rule 5 draft by Oakland), Asadoorian. He should be held accountable for this if the judgments turn out to be bad.

So, in 4 months.

Medlock...for a 1 month rental of Jorge Cantu.
Guevara.....give away
Asadoorian....give away

For an organization so desperate that they pay out the wazoo for the likes of Rheal Cormier and Mike Stanton, make a trade for a Gary Majewski, let Victor Santos wear a uniform and generally make a habit of crying about lack of middle relief help, you gotta wonder what they are thinking.

But at least they got Sergio Valenzuela. Sweetness.

I'm nitpicking just to nitpick, but I think the Medlock trade was over four months ago. The point's the same, though. Plus they also just released Brad Salmon. Still, they've acquired Francisco Cordero and Justin James. Only time will tell, but I don't think Medlock, Guevara, nor Asadoorian will be anywhere near the answer Cordero will be.
