Catching Situation

With Javier's Hammy strain we are now down to Bako.........

Lets hope a deal gets done for a new catcher, but I think the likely conclusion will be Hanigan brought up.

We already have 4 catchers on the team.
Along with Bako -
Hattaberg - he started out as a catcher
Votto - same thing
Freel - he's said he's able to play catcher before

Their defense can't be any worse than Valentines, so what's the difference?

Quote from Dusty

Quote:
"I asked (Hatteberg) if he still had his catching skills. he caught for me in the fall league in 1992. Catching is a very volatile position," Baker said.
He never gave Hatte's answer. I don't think you can rely on a 39 year old who hasn't caught for almost 10 years to be your catcher. I don't think we will see Votto, Hatte or Freel behind the plate. Bako will be behind there, if Valentin is out for awhile he will either see a trip to the DL, or Hopper will be sent down and Hanigan will come up.

Re: Catching Situation

why would you send down hopper. Place Javy on the DL. Then call up Hanigan. When Ross is eligible to come back off the DL you send down hanigan. It doesn't take a rocket scientist. Hopper is to valuable to send down at the moment.

Why would you want somebody who has listed as never playing a game at catcher to catch a game? Plus Dusty has said that he relies on catchers 100% to call the game, do you really want Ryan Freel calling the game?

Ryan Freel will NOT CATCH.

You did not under stand what I was saying not Freel catch Freel play not Hopper, if that the case Hopper or even Bruce should be playing not Patterson.

Re: Catching Situation

How long is Nacho Libre out?

BTW - The idea of Freel and/or Hatte catching is an awful one.

Re: Catching Situation

It would be fun to watch Freel behind the plate and I agree that his defense couldnt be much worse than Valentin but I say they DL Javy and bring up someone to fill in until Ross is eligible to come back.

Re: Catching Situation

Trade some Prospects for Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

I know it's not that easy to just say "Trade for that guy", but he got sent down and hopefully is available...

It's going to take more than prospects unless your putting Bailey in that catagory.

Re: Catching Situation

I wouldnt trade Bailey. A rotation of Harang, Arroyo, Cueto, Volquez, and Bailey next year could be a VERY VERY good one. Salty is a good player and has had some success but I think Bailey developing could have a bigger impact on the franchise than Salty developing.
