#206 on career HR list: Dunn ties Roberto Clemente

Adam Dunn hit his 240th career home run today to move into a tie with Roberto Clemente and Jeff Burroughs for #206 on the list of all-time home run hitters.

Clemente was a 12-time All Star and was the 1966 NL MVP. He was the MVP of the 1971 World Series. His career lasted 18 years until it was tragically cut short when he perished in a plane crash on the last day of 1972. His last game was against the Reds in the 1972 playoffs. He finished his career with exactly 3000 hits. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973 because the normal 5 year waiting period was waived (the only time that has occurred).

Burroughs was a slugging outfielder that had a long career with the Senators, Rangers, Braves, Mariners, Athletics and Blue Jays. He made the All Star team twice and won the AL MVP in 1974. Burroughs was the 1st pick of the 1st round of the 1969 draft. He is one of only 4 #1 draft picks to ever win the MVP award (Griffey Jr., A-Rod, and Chipper are the others). Burroughs' son Sean played in the big leagues with the Padres and Devil Rays.

Next up on the list with 241 career homers are Cecil Cooper, Jesse Barfield, and Rick Monday. Dusty Baker has 242.

I really don't think he does. Just not sure he plays long enough. With his body and already limited defensive abilities I am not sure he plays past 35.

He is 28 years old this year. He has hit exactly 40 home runs each of the last three seasons. If he continues to hit 40 homers per year he will reach #600 when he is only 37 years old. That is a pretty strong pace.

Of course, if he gets injured that would set him back. But if he hits more than 40 for a few years he may even hit 700 if he plays to age 40. He certainly has the power to hit 50+ homers per year, but his 100 walks per year deprive him of at-bats. His Ks don't help either.

Incidentally, Dunn is 6th on the all-time Reds HR list. He is 4 homers behind George Foster, who had 244 as a Red. Ted Kluszewski had 251.

Fay later commented that he copied that post from a fan and it was the fan who made the lazy comment. I just thought it was interesting post since a lot of folks are always saying Dunn hits meaningless homeruns when that's not true at all.

Yes. Health is good. There are some players that are chronically injured and miss large chunks of time every year. Then there are guys that fight through the injuries and play with pain. Dunn played most of last year with a very painful knee that certainly affected both his hitting and defensive play. He never complained about it, even when the haters were calling him lazy and slow.

There will always be haters that want to complain and whine about the team's best player. They just have a need to blame someone for the team's losing ways. "Sure, Dunn hits 40 homers, scores 100 runs and gets 100 RBIs every year -- but they all came after the game was over so they don't really count."

Fortunately most Redszoners are more intelligent than the morons that post on the other major Reds message boards. I don't know how anyone can even read the drivel on those forums without being totally disgusted after 5 minutes.
