Now that's a lot of money!

I was just listening to a report on NPR about Delta Air Lines reporting that they lost $6 Billion in the 1st Quarter this year. I did the math and that's

$763 per second
$45,787 per minute
$2.75 Million per hour
$65.9 Million per day
$461.5 Million per month

Ouch! That's an incredible amount of money.

Re: Now that's a lot of money!

Most of that loss is because of rising fuel costs. Next time you're filling up the tank and lamenting how much more it's costing you, just remember how much more Delta is paying.

Interesting. Speaking of fuel, compare those numbers to Exxon Mobil 2007 profit of $40,610,000,000

Day - $111,260,274
Hour - $4,635,845
Minute - $77,264
Second - $1,288

To be fair most of that was a write off as an adjustment to the value of their stock. They still lost like $274 million though.

It's actually worse than that because they lost the 6 billion over three months and not over an entire year.

You have to take some of these "losses" with a grain of salt. Many are just "accounting" (as in not cash) losses.

Delta doesn't have a $6 billion dollar overdraft at the bank.

I remember only a few years back Time Warner reported a $50 billion loss, from writing down goodwill from the AOL merger.
