June 12th Minor League Game Updates

Dayton up 4-0 after half an inning thanks to a Logan Parker 3 run HR.

Devin Mesoraco is 1-2. Dayton is up 5-2.

Louisville is tied at 0-0 after three.

Re: June 12th Minor League Game Updates

anyone know why Mes got pulled? Injury or callup? I'd find it hard to believe he'd be getting called up.

Ejected about two pitches after Donnie Scott was ejected.

Re: June 12th Minor League Game Updates

Before today's game, some numbers to note:

* 22-year-old (23 in the middle of August) SS Chris Valaika is hitting .294 after a rough start in AA. His AA OPS is up to 815 as well and his overall numbers may be the most impressive of any in the Red system. (330/375/525/900) He may be the second coming of Jeff Keppinger as a SS, but he's certainly become an intruiging option as early as September.

* CF Shaun Cumberland (24 on 8/1) has slumped to a 291 BA after a huge start, but his OBP is still excellent (389) and his pop (8 HR, 2 3B, & 7 2B) isn't all that bad. (He's leading the AA Chattanooga team in OPS for the season.) If he's a plus glove, he's another really nice suprise on the season and an option for a spot in CF assuming Junior, Dunn, or both aren't here next season. Another plus: 27 BB, 28 K.

* Will the real Daniel Perales stand up? In roughly the same number of at-bats in both low A Dayton and High A Sarasota, Perales has added almost 200 OPS points to the bottom line. It is a small sample size, though.

* Top Five OPS hitters in the Cincinnati pipeline?
1. Frazier (929 overall) [High A]
2. Valaika (900 overall) [AA]
3. Cumberland (873) [AA]
4. Tonys Gutierrez (858) [AA]
5. Daniel Dorn (842) [AA]

Not much pop or patience in the pipeline, IMO.

I don't know whether that makes him a firey competitor or a prima dona.

Pop/patience guys are Alonso and Frazier. These are your two big front line hitting prospects right now. Others could make it, but these are the two main guys.

Re: June 12th Minor League Game Updates

Cumberland is actually coming back strongly after a very weak May, when he fell off to .233 for the month. He was hitting .323 for the last ten games coming into tonight and is now 2-3. He should be in Louisville any day now, hopefully for what will be a brief stay before replacing you know who as our leadoff man and CFer when Bruce is not out there.

Valaika is really close to being there if he sticks at SS.

Definitely agree on Valaika.

Gutierrez has three walks tonight as his OBP heads back up near .450. Think the Reds could use a .400 OBP guy, even if he's not a power hitter?

Re: June 12th Minor League Game Updates

Not at 1B. If he could only play CF...

On another notes, Logan Parker's year has been horrible, so far. Started with the injury. Now, he's hitting a robust .202. Ugh. I thought he might go further than low A. Mesoraco has just under 100 at-bats in Dayton and is hitting as well as anyone there. (Talk about damning with faint praise.)

Cumberland finished 4 for 5. If I were Walt, I'd have him on the train/bus/plane to L'ville. Makes no sense to wait longer.
