Hawaiian Winter League and Arizona Fall League

Does anyone know or have any guesses as to which players the Reds will send to these leagues? I'd like to see Alonso, Frazier and Stubbs in Arizona and Meso, Francisco, and Soto in Hawaii.

I hope Alonso gets assigned somewhere. And I'd like to see Owings as a hitter in Arizona, provided his shoulder is OK.

I'd definitely like to see Alonso get some additional atbats in one of those leagues. I figure Juan Francisco will play in one of the Dominican leagues.

Frazier, Stubbs, Valaika and Turner to AFL? Henry, Dorn, Heisey to Hawaii ?
When do the rosters come out? The Reds are in Peoria this year.

Re: Hawaiian Winter League and Arizona Fall League

IIRC winter leagues are considered to be between A+ and AA, with AFL being the better of the two leagues. I just checked and last year the Reds sent Valaika, Griffin, Lecure, and Ondrusek to Hawaii. Tatum, Rosales, Pelland, Jukich, Roenicke, and Viola went to Arizona. These players came from A+ and AA rosters. If Alonzo is evaluated as ready for that level, as most people on the board believe, then he would seem to be a good candidate. Otherwise I would look to SAR and CHA rosters for candidates.

Suggestions thus far have been light on pitching. I suggest Buck, Carroll, Watson, and Lutz. Though his stats have been underwhelming to date, Lutz is an extreme ground ball pitcher.

I would doubt the Reds would want Buck to add any more innings to his arm than he already has. Take the offseason to rest and be ready to roll in '09

Re: Hawaiian Winter League and Arizona Fall League

My Hope:

AFL - Alonso, Frazier (at 3B only), Dorn, Stewart, Watson, Geronimo

HFL - Heisey, Henry (to play CF only), Viola (as a starter), Mace Thurman (Kid's gonna move quickly).

The Reds are trying to keep Stewart's innings down so I doubt they'll send him to a fall league.

Ok scratch Stewart. Maybe a late signee like Sulbarren instead.

What do you mean by that? Is the organization really considering that or is it just your opinion?

Yeah, no way -- he pitched all college season. A lot of times the pitchers are second/third tiers and/or guys who need innings coming off an injury. Many more premium players on the offensive side. Perfect fit for Alonso, either league.

Re: Hawaiian Winter League and Arizona Fall League

FYI, here are the eligibility rules for the AFL. I don't know if the HWL has similar rules

Quote:
Each Major League organization is required to provide six players subject to the following requirements:

All Triple-A and Double-A players are eligible, provided the players are on at least a Double-A level roster no later than Aug. 1.

One player below the Double-A level is allowed per Major League team.

One foreign player is allowed, as long as the player does not reside in a country that participates in winter ball, as part of the Caribbean Confederation or the Australian winter league.

No players with more than one year of credited Major League service as of August 31 are eligible, except a team may select one player picked in the most recently concluded Major League Rule 5 Draft.

To be eligible, players on Minor League disabled lists must be activated at least 45 days before the conclusion of their respective seasons.
