Looking To The Future..
John Sickels every year ranks teams top 20 prospects. The Reds top 20 in 2008 were:
1. Jay Bruce, OF, Grade A (I'm not worried about the strikeouts given his age and performance) 2. Johnny Cueto, RHP, Grade A- 3. Joey Votto, 1B, Grade A- 4. Homer Bailey, RHP, Grade B+ 5. Todd Frazier, SS-3B, Grade B+ 6. Matthew Maloney, LHP, Grade B (I have always liked him, has component marks of a power pitcher not a finesse guy even though he doesn't throw hard) 7. Devin Mesoraco, C, Grade B 8. Drew Stubbs, OF, Grade B- 9. Neftali Soto, SS-3B, Grade B- 10. Kyle Lotzkar, RHP, Grade B- (a long way off but a good intuitive feeling) 11. Daniel Dorn, OF, Grade B- (major sleeper) 12. Jared Burton, RHP, Grade C+ 13. Tyler Pelland, LHP, Grade C+ 14. Pedro Viola, LHP, Grade C+ (sleeper!) 15. Travis Wood, LHP, Grade C+ (health??) 16. Josh Roenicke, RHP, Grade C+ 17. Scott Carroll, RHP, Grade C+ 18. Chris Valaika, INF, Grade C+ 19. Adam Rosales, 1B, Grade C+ 20. Sean Watson, RHP, Grade C+ 21. Brandon Waring, 3B, Grade C+ (the strikeouts scare me) Sickels post this review on this list: Quote:

Re: Looking To The Future..
Soto is only a B-? I expected a bit higher for him. Also, is it a good thing or a bad thing when you're #6 prospect is a 4th starter type?

Re: Looking To The Future..
Perhaps I don't understand the grade system, but how does Homer get a B+? And what did Roenicke do to earn a C+?

I imagine Roenicke will be higher and Homer lower in the post season or next season report.

Re: Looking To The Future..
How long ago did Sickels post his update? Some of the stats were old and he didn't mention recent events like Stubbs' promotion to Louisville or Lotzkar's injury.

Re: Looking To The Future..
This is an old list from the offseason. Bruce, Cueto, Votto, Burton, and Bailey are no longer prospects. Soto, Stubbs, Roenicke, and Lotzkar have all made fairly high jumps, especially Soto. Soto may be the number one prospect in the system now.

Re: Looking To The Future..
It was last year and relievers, no matter how good, aren't all that valuable compared to good starters. Give me a solid #3/4 starter every day of the week over a dominant closer.

Relievers pitch about 45 innings per season on average. Starters pitch 200 innings. You want your best pitchers throwing the most innings or to phrase it differently, you want most of your team's innings to be pitched by your best pitchers. That is why your best pitchers are starters and your second-rate pitchers are relievers. There are exceptions (guys coming off surgery, high-effort blasters that can't hold up for multiple innings), but that is the general rule. A lot of guys that were starters in the minors become relievers in the majors because they aren't as good as the major league starting staff. But if a guy is made into a reliever in the low minors it is almost always because he is not considered a quality prospect. |
