Rolling Stone shrinking to regular magazine size

An interesting comment on Rolling Stone website's review of Tool's Lateralus:

slashgnfnr206, most of rollingstone editors are still from the journalism major background. They cannot comprehend anything from any other perspective. Thats why you can see them still pining for the days of Bob Dylan where political lyricism pertinent to their youths long since past reigned supreme. They cannot understand heavy music, and write it off as showing off and little else. It is unfortunate, because they were so good at seeing what was great with the old songwriter/musicians of the 60s, but so bad at seeing the good in other styles of music. The soul and passion of groups like tool, led zeppelin and other great heavy artists goes unnoticed or at least misunderstood.

Thats why you see 4 star ratings for masterpieces like this. You have essentially prose criticism for raw and exposed music like this and it just doesn't work.

My wife and I still enjoy RS for what it's worth. We subscribe/re-subscribe whenever some kids fundraiser (latest being ours!) offers the opportunity. It is starting to get us at least slightly back in touch with some current stuff going on. As with anything I read, I just try to sort through and see if I may possibly be entertained or somehow in some way informed by the content. We do enjoy the reviews most of all.

But politics and music is why most went to the magazine in the first place, not for stories on movie stars or current teenny bopper sensations.

That makes a lot more sense. To be honest, until I started getting the magazine free cause of some CD's I bought, I had never read it. I didn't know anything about it. I just assumed it was an "all-music" type of magazine. Then half of it ends up being about politics and doesn't really have any link to music and I didn't really care for that. I figured if I wanted to read that I would go buy a political magazine. But knowing that's how its always been really makes a lot more sense. I guess it's just not what I was looking for.

Yeah. I really liked it. I played it, and tried to burn it later, but the files were gone. I'm gonna buy it anyway...Ponce of the Flaming Peace Queer is just an instumental followed by usual intro about traveling around for 20 years making this stuff up like he always says. Thanks. I downloaded them earlier but only listened once so far. I'll still get the CD anyway also. I had not heard about the show. Last (only) time I saw Todd live was in NY. I'd love to catch a show closer to home.

I am worried that once Rolling Stone goes to a normal size magazine that it will only include advertisements and "preaching to the choir" political commentaries. However I will still read it for the reviews and continue to ignore them completely and listen to what I please.

If anyone is into Indie Rock there is a good magazine I've been reading for a while called Paste. Each issue comes with a CD with 15 songs on it that are lesser known bands. Each issue I definitely pick-up at least 2 new bands I've never heard of before.

Lastly, for those that say music is no good anymore, that is just not true. The issue is that Pop music and traditional rock music is no longer good. It does take more of an effort to discover good bands, but they are out their in abundance. On Sirius Satellite Radio check out Channel 26 Left of Center. You will find music that is pleasing to the ear and mind.
