I can't figure this out (pitching related)

Every game I watch (and I watch A LOT of baseball on satellite), I see what I believe to be a very small strike zone league wide, across the board. But I keep seeing zeroes on the scoreboard at the end of the night for lots of teams. So I look on baseballreference.com/ and I see 19 team shutouts in the NL already, compared to 30 team shutouts for the entire season last year in the NL . I see 13 team shutouts for the AL already this year, compared to 24 for the entire season last year. Pitching that much better? Cold weather so far? Lace of performance enhancing drugs? Thoughts? These are the things that make me love the game of baseball, you never know when the worm will turn for hitters, pitchers, etc.

That is an interesting observation, HC. It will be interesting to see how those numbers hold up across the entire season.

I actually don't see a small strike zone, I see an erratic one. Umpiring has been dreadful so far this year. I am not sure if the new umpiring judging system is to blame or what. I just know that no matter what game I watch, there is no consistency in pitch calling.
I would assume that that would help the pitcher, since a hitter would have to swing at more pitches outside the strikezone, since he can't be sure. But that is just a guess.

I think one of the reasons for the better pitching is the longer spring training.

Another oddball thing........shutouts are up, statistically speaking, by a significant amount (this is team shutouts), but ERA's are not down.

Feast or famine?

Offenses are either going wild and putting up big numbers, or not scoring at all.

It seems that ERAs as a whole are up, but shutouts are also up.

This is probably off-topic, but sort of related: Why didn't expansion dilute the hitting?

Expansion didn't dilute anything. People that say that make my head hurt. Population is up by incredible amounts and we are bringing in players on a world wide scale. The pitching is better than its ever been. So is the hitting..

I thought this was an interesting question and I dragged your comment over to the Continental League thread I started. Here is my post.

it's not just you. literally, every set of team commentators have made some sort of comment about the odd strike zone so far this season. make of it what you will, but it seems strange.

One story that points out how much pitching has improved in the last 25 years:

In 1983, when the Cardinals traded Keith Hernandez for Neil Allen, Whitey Herzog justified it by saying that guys who throw over 90 MPH don't come around that often and you need to grab them when they are available.
I would imagine that close to 90% of major league pitchers hit above 90 MPH these days.
