Tuesday 7/14/09 minor-league updates

I think somewhere on here we had the GCL Reds losing, 7-4, but I don't see it. Couple more hits for Henry Rodriguez. Doubles for him, Yorman and Theodis Bowe, who also had two hits.

The DSL lads won 5-0 behind more good-looking pitching by Luis Machuca, a 21-year-old righthander from Panama who is now 6-1 (for a team that is 16-22) with an 0.87 ERA. Today, 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K. Also nice work by Jose Marizan and Samuel Vasquez. Junior Arias was 3 for 5 with a 2B and 3B.

Yorman is hitting .292/.370/.354 - .724 OPS.

Junior Arias struggled through the first three weeks of June but has really turned it on since. He's hitting .351/.429/.568 - .996 in July.

Sounds like Yorman is the real deal, too bad Duran isn't putting up the same #'s. It would be nice to be able to keep them together during their rise through the minors as it gives them companionship. By this I mean both being extremely young, non-english speakers in a foreign country with a different culture.

What is next for the lads, isn't instructional ball next up in the fall?

I'm not at all concerned about Duran

as he's shown speed and gap power potential and solid fielding. Yea, Yorman is raking more, but Duran is still doing very well for being a 16 year old playing pro baseball.

Duran is actually 17. He's a full year older than Yorman. And, to make me feel really old, both were born after I graduated high school!
