Re: The Official 'Who Do We Protect from the Rule Five Draft?' Thread

I wonder if the Reds will protect Buck? He's a gamble either way. You protect him at someones expense, or expose him and run the risk that he's past his injuries. I'm not sure he'll ever be healthy enough to contribute.

Can a team pick a player with an injury and put him on the 60 day DL in order to get around carrying him on the active roster? Is there any requirement that the player be active for at least some part of the season? Buck and Thompson would both be candidates for such a grab.

I think they need to be active at least 90 days in order to allow them to send him down the following year.

That's correct. If a player spends less time than that on the active roster, then his time must carry over into the next season until he accrues the 90 days.

Wood will be protected. The Reds will not give away a left handed starter.
Ondusek will be traded or protected. The Reds will not give away their AAA closer.

I don't know who all has the service time to be eligible. Heisey and Fraizer should be protected if possible

Is Smit eligible? He would be a risk for rule five, but he is a left handed pitcher which increases his value.
