Re: Suprised no talk about Strasburg getting torched

Of course one would rather see good numbers than bad ones.

But the numbers are meaningless. The environment, huge range in talent distribution, different developmental agendas for specific players and last but certainly not least-extremely small sample sizes, make for nothing more than "getting your work in".

No doubt you'll get weird results here and there. But performances at either end of the spectrum -- very good or very bad -- have a good chance of being meaningful. If I were you, I'd be hoping to see Aumont throw some strikes. He's already busted as a starter, and he won't be a high leverage reliever if he can't throw strikes.

They (AFL stats) have little chance of offering new insight. I'm sorry but they just don't given all of the serious issues related to their interpretation.

At best the AFL is a scout's league.

I mostly agree as far as projecting a guy's future goes, but I do think there is some significance. These are mostly AA players who are generally among the top prospects of their organizations. A successful 120 ABs or 6 week pitching stint could be the deciding factor for determining things like whether a player is protected on the 40 man roster, starts the following season in AAA or AA or gets an invitation to big league camp. I'd say its more than simply getting work in.

Stephen Strasburg-S- Nationals Oct. 28 - 8:31 am et

Stephen Strasburg carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and struck out five Tuesday in his third Arizona Fall League start.

It was a brilliant bounce-back outing for the 21-year-old, who allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- in his last AFL start. Strasburg displayed a good deal of control and confidence Tuesday, hurling 42 of his 67 pitches for strikes. "You have to have a short-term memory," he said in a post-game chat with reporters. "I just went out there today and tried to pitch my game."
All I know is that one game, good or bad, doesn't mean much in the big picture. It's such a small sample size when the ultimate question is when the guy could be in the majors. Good for Strasburg but he'd probably have to keep it up through the AFL AND spring training to make things interesting.
