Reds dumping Sarasota...

Per Fay:

Quote:
From Sarasota to Lynchburg (sort of)

Posted by jfay October 28th, 2009, 10:43 am The Reds are selling the their Florida State League affiliate to the Pirates. The Sarasota Reds will become the Bradenton Reds.
To replace the high Single-A team, the Reds will take over the Pirates’ Lynchburg team in the Carolina League.
All this is subject to apporval by the FSL, but it almost certainly happen.
The Reds’ team in the Gulf Coast League will be replaced by a team in the Arizona Summer League.
“That’s exact same kind of league as the GCL,” director of baseball operations Dick Williams said. “Arizona League moved the games to nights this year because it’s so hot. They’ll play under the lights at our big field.”
Thanks to Dan in Buffalo for asking about the FSL team.

Re: Reds dumping Sarasota...

Why will the Sarasota Red become the Brandenton Reds? Isn't Brandenton in Florida too?

Re: Reds dumping Sarasota...

The Lynchburg deal may only be 1 year. Winston-Salem as a new permanent home makes a lot of sense if the Reds stay in Carolina for AA.

Reds used to be in Winston-Salem, team is in a lot of flux.

Re: Reds dumping Sarasota...

Are they keeping the Hillcats name or will they be the Lynchburg Reds?

Re: Reds dumping Sarasota...

I'd be stunned if they changed the name. They gave been the Hillcats a long time and the Reds are on a 1 year deal.

FSL approves sale of Sarasota Reds
Cincinnati's Class A team to be taken over by Pirates
By Jenifer Langosch / MLB.com

11/10/09 5:57 PM EST

PITTSBURGH -- The Florida State League owners have approved Cincinnati's sale of its Class A club to the Pirates, which was the final step in the Reds' pursuit to move all of the organization's operations out of Sarasota, Fla.

With this approval from the FSL, the Pirates have assumed control of the Reds' Class A team in Sarasota and are relocating that club to Bradenton, Fla. The Reds no longer had a need for a team in Sarasota since the club has moved its Spring Training home and training facilities to Goodyear, Ariz.

For the Reds, the swap allows Cincinnati to make the Lynchburg (Va.) Hillcats its Class A Advanced club for at least the 2010 season. The Hillcats, which play in the eight-team Carolina League, approved the exchange even though the Pirates had one year remaining on their contract. If the Reds wish to keep their Class A Advanced team in Lynchburg beyond next season, a new contract would have to be negotiated during or after the season.

With the sale of their affiliate, the Reds have now officially cut all ties with Sarasota, which had served as the organization's Spring Training home since 1998. The club has already moved all of its operations out west to Goodyear.

Re: Reds dumping Sarasota...

I'm sure this has been asked before, but what's the story with Lynchburg in terms park & league effects?

Lynchburg 1.01 1.02 1.13 0.91 0.97 0.95

The Winston-Salem park will be brand new. Construction on it is not even complete for the coming year but they're all over it to be ready. Currently the White Sox are there. The Reds have one more year under contract here in AA and I truly hope they stay beyond this.

Lynchburg is a good park for any organization. They won the Carolina League championship this year with the Pirates and the fans support their team there. I would not bemoan being in Lynchburg at all. The Pirates used to have the same situation here, Lynchburg and Zebulon for A and AA ball respectively.

Re: Reds dumping Sarasota...

The Carolina Mudcats have announced their field staff for 2010. David Bell will return as manager and Ryan Jackson will return as hitting coach. Tom Brown moves up from Sarasota to take over the pitching coach responsibilities.
