I've always liked Paul Keels.

Now it would be kinda cool if the Reds could add some talent to the product on the field.

Great news. Has an awesome voice and is just a great all around announcer.

Loved him when he did UC games. Good hire.

Re: Paul Keels added to the FSO Reds broadcast team

Do they really need another play by play guy? I thought that was the reason Jim Kelch was hired. Somehow George Grande seems to have triggered three new contracts for 2010, Thom, Kelch and Keels. We won't know from game to game who'll be announcing where...

But Thom and Jim Kelch aren't really new to the team. They were both here last year in slightly different roles so the only new guy they're adding is Keels. They have to cover most of the 162 games per season so it makes sense that they have several good options in house for those positions.

I like the guy. Good choice by FSN Ohio.

Tom was an instructor at CSB many years ago. What struck me was how down to earth he was. He was the voice for a freaking NBA franchise teaching us lowlifes how to do it.

What a guy.

Re: Paul Keels added to the FSO Reds broadcast team

Keels is not very good. Great pipes, nice guy, but he's not a very passionate announcer and doesn't work hard at his craft. He doesn't do his homework and is often unprepared (as any Ohio State fan could tell you). He doesn't do a great job of "painting a picture" and is very dry. Not that a TV PBP guy needs to paint a picture like a radio guy does, but there is still an art to it.

But Keels isn't terrible or anything. I probably have listened to him as much or more than anyone on this board due to following OSU football/basketball and Bengals preseason games. (Keels is actually at his best doing basketball on radio. He's pretty good at that. He's bad at football though. Never heard him do a baseball game.)

I will say this: I love the fact that Thom B will be doing more Reds games on TV and George Grande retired. Having Keels fill in every now and then won't be too bad and at least we won't have to hear Grande any longer.

I also think Jim Kelch should be more involved on the radio side. Maybe Marty will continue to take more and more time off. Although, can he take much more time off and still be considered full time? ;-)

Seems as though he used to have a sports call-in show on WLW or WCKY a few years ago.

Anyone have any comments on him a baseball announcer?

I'm a little concerned about this hire.

He did the Reds pregame show before going to OSU.

Keels makes a fair number of mistakes in calling games.

"Absa-tiv-ley."

I think he does a good job of calling basketball (over the radio), but most dihard Buckeye fans I know (as well as myself) think he's pretty stale calling football.

He just seems to be all voice and pretty much void of any substance.

Nothing like Chuck Underwood or Terry Smith.
