Just my opinion but I think it's obvious Walt is a master of this and of course all clubs do it to some extent. But did one finally get their tail caught in the crack?

Mets' talk of Bay ploy to pacify fans?

Ticket sales are lagging and fans are screaming for the Mets to make a meaningful acquisition. And, poof, they suddenly were acknowledging making an offer yesterday to Jason Bay. So was this merely a ploy to change the subject or was this a clear change of course this offseason? A person familiar with the Mets' bid said the offer was for four years and between $60 million and $65 million. Bay has already rejected a deal from Boston believed to be in the four-year, $60 million range. So was this an offer designed as a first step to more negotiations or an offer designed to be rejected, but also to get the Mets the positive feedback of being linked to a top player?

Sounds like a reasonable offer to me. Just because he rejected a similar (allegedly similar) offer from one team doesn't necessarily mean that isn't the market rate. It sounds more like NY media trying to create a sinister plot.

There's been a lot of talk that the Mets will have to cut payroll because the Wilpons (owners) lost in excess of $350M in the Madoff scandal, or so it's been reported.

The Mets had been looking at lower-tier FAs, but the day after the Yanks pull off a deal for Granderson, the Mets suddenly make Bay an offer that he's basically already rejected.

Not really hard to correct the dots, and it fits the Mets pattern of behavior since Omar has been the GM.

The Mariners are "not a serious player" for Jason Bay, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com. The Braves and Giants don't appear to be engaged with Bay and the Angels aren't focused on him now, so the Mets are the lone known suitor for the left fielder. They're keeping in touch with Scott Boras, who represents Matt Holliday, but they may be willing to offer Bay a deal in the five-year $75MM range. They're hoping to hear back from him today.
