Earthquake in Haiti
http://www1.voanews.com/english/news...-81311282.html
Thousands Feared Dead After Haitian Earthquake The 7.0 magnitude quake that struck Tuesday is most powerful to hit the Caribbean nation in 200 years. VOA News 13 January 2010 Haitians are lining bodies along the streets of Port-au-Prince, where thousands are feared dead after a massive earthquake destroyed much of the capital. The 7.0 magnitude quake that struck Tuesday was the most powerful to hit the Caribbean nation in 200 years. The temblor collapsed the presidential palace, ministries, homes, schools, monuments and the city's largest hospital. The International Red Cross says up to 3 million people have been affected. Bodies were pulled Wednesday from the collapsed United Nations headquarters in Port-au-Prince. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says more than 100 U.N. personnel are missing, including the mission chief, Hedi Annabi. Mr. Ban is dispatching Annabi's predecessor, Edmond Mulet, to the island. The Brazilian military says four Brazilian peacekeepers died in the quake. Roman Catholic missionaries with the Saint Jacque Society say the archbishop of Port-Au-Prince, Monsignor Serge Miot, also is among the dead. About 3,000 U.N. peacekeepers are based in Port-au-Prince. They are clearing roads to assist search and rescue teams. AFP Haitians walk past damaged buildings in Port-au-Prince, 12 Jan 2010 The work is difficult, however, as rubble is everywhere and communication and power lines are out across the city. The disaster has spread beyond the capital. A Haitian woman, who lives 19 kilometers east of Port-au-Prince, told VOA Creole Service her brother and nephew are trapped under rubble. She said late Tuesday their voices could be heard but nobody could reach them. The Red Cross says there is an urgent need for search and rescue volunteers as well as field hospitals, emergency health, water purification and telecommunications. Offers of international aid are pouring in. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Recent development efforts have suffered severe setbacks because of political violence, lawlessness, corruption and natural disasters. Terrible news...

Re: Earthquake in Haiti
Text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10.00 to Red Cross for relief from the earthquake, they're predicting up to 500,000 dead...

Re: Earthquake in Haiti
My goodness, this is an absolute nightmare for the people of Haiti, a country that can't seem to find peace, or luck.

Re: Earthquake in Haiti
Earthquakes are the pits, especially in underdeveloped countries or on soft land areas. been 20 years since 89 but it seems like just yesterday and still scares the heck out of me to think about it.

Re: Earthquake in Haiti
A friend of mine will be in Blue Ash on Friday to work at Matthew 25 Ministries. Just saw a bit on Fox news that the Haitian Leader is saying 30-50,000 dead at least.

Re: Earthquake in Haiti
I used to go to church with a guy who heads up a ministry in Haiti. A friend of mine got a message from him that he went past a demolished school that had dump trucks full of the bodies of children. Hundreds of them. Words fail. The whole country needs our prayers.

Re: Earthquake in Haiti
I know the woman in this story.
I had a graduate class with her 2-3 years ago. We did a couple of in-class assignments/projects together. Damn. Come on miracle. Last edited by 15fan; 01-14-2010 at 11:00 PM. |

Re: Earthquake in Haiti
Poorest Country in the Western Hemisphere plus 7.0 magnitude earthquake w/ numerous aftershocks and death tolls into the 6 figures is going to mean absolute chaos in Haiti for years to come. Not to say Haiti was a country on the brink of becoming a super-power, but I really don't see how Haiti overcomes this mess.
So, what's going to happen to Haiti? Say, 10 years from now?
