Something I have always wondered
How does some of the news/rumors get out in sports? Like how does it get leaked to the public that Pete Carroll was interested in Seattle and how would his exact potential salary(5 years 35 mill) get leaked? Not that many people can know about this, right? Same with baseball trade rumors, although there are a bunch of those that never come to fruition. But for the most part coaching rumors and salary numbers are pretty spot on and I was just wondering how they get leaked to the likes of Chris Mortenson, Adam Shefftler, Buster Olney etc...

Not sure. Maybe these writers pay for this "secret" information?

Re: Something I have always wondered
I think many times, the team wants the news to get out and calls it a "leak."

Re: Something I have always wondered
Sometimes it's expected and the norm. Sometimes the team wants the info out. But, above all else, people will talk. There's almost always someone who will say something. And you just need one person to say something. And then you ask another person "well I heard it was this much" and they say "no no no do you think we'd pay that much for a one year deal" and then you ask someone else...

Re: Something I have always wondered
Or maybe the coach wants to get it out. I suspect this might happen more often when you hear a coach pull his name out of consideration, or signs a big extension - his people spread the rumor for his benefit.
But, as others have said, people like to talk. If more than one person knows something, it's hard to keep a secret, especially if you can curry favor with the media by giving them the scoop.

I think it is the agents. Particularly in baseball, where they are playing one team against another.
