I personally hate those picks, they tend to disappoint in a few years, but maybe the Reds see him as someone who can help this year, and considering how weak the draft is after the first five or six, I could see some logic to it... some, but not much.

Jim Callis says it's Workman not Ruffin the reds are thinking of taking.

Re: The Official (First) Draft Day Thread - 2010
If the Reds are looking for immediate bullpen help then just fast track Donnie Joseph. Judging off the scouting reports I've seen of Ruffin, Joseph has better stuff and considering he's already pitching well in High-A, he's more advanced than Ruffin too. Don't waste a top 15 pick on a college reliever.

Re: The Official (First) Draft Day Thread - 2010
Last mock draft from Jim Callis:
12. Reds. Brandon Workman, rhp, Texas http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=2255 Workman is a big dude at 6-foot-5, 220, and has a fastball than ranges from 90-95 mph with plus movement, a plus cutter, an average curve, and a good feel for the changeup. The only problem is he apparently has the mechanics of a reliever. Scouting video: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?co...pic_id=8080130

Keith Law says Drew Pomeranz is sliding. I'd love to see him slide down to the Reds...

I don't see the concerns with Workman's mechanics at first glance...

[Comment From Puffy Puffy: ]
Keith Law is the one who just posted the Chance Ruffin to Cincy rumor. He feels its strong possiblilty. Monday June 7, 2010 6:02 Puffy 6:03 Frankie Piliere: Hats off to him if he's right but I have to hear it. There's going to be guys on the board they like better I think

Callis' final mock has Grandal going 25 to the Cardinals. Wow, talk about a quick slide if true!

Re: The Official (First) Draft Day Thread - 2010
If Pomeranz is still there Id take him but if not I really dont want to pass Brentz up for one of the other college pitchers like wimmers
