Having a AAA team within an hour's drive of the ML club has the effect of extending the active roster to 28-30. 3-7 players might be in a shuttle status. There is little travel time lost in bringing someone in to make a spot start or adding an arm to the bullpen after a couple of high use days. Fans of the AAA club are not as likely to be upset by this taxi squad tactic as they come to see the AAA club as an extension of the ML club.
Of course that only holds true when both the AAA team and the big league team are both at home. Which is still some of the time, at least.
Unfortunate for Portland as a baseball fan, although Major League Soccer will be a great boost for the economy.
AAA will be back with a few years...as the owner (Merritt Paulson, Henry's son) is very invested in having baseball here, just couldn't swing a deal for a stadium in time.
Baseball is like church. Many attend, few understand
