Very good move. Sets up the possibility of getting some value for a guy who no longer has any likely role on the pitching staff. Almost surely would have been exposed to rule 5 draft this year and I'd guess he'd have been pretty likely to be taken by somebody in need of a potential 5 starter.

He couldn't have been taken in the Rule 5 draft since he was on the 40-man roster.

Perhaps so. But any way you look at it, Grandal gets a spot that would have gone to someone else after the season.

Not that I have a big problem with that, necessarily.

I don't think there's the slightest chance he still would have been in Dec.

But to be taken off the 40-man roster, he has to go through waivers anyhow. So the Rule 5 would not have been an option. That's for players that have not been protected to begin with.

Ok. Good point. Doesn't change my original point, though, that there's really no place for him on the roster and he would have been removed to make places for guys needing protection. DRH will, IMO, be next.

Yeah I tend to agree with you: he was likely to be removed from the 40-man this November anyhow.

Not crazy about the major league deal but I'm glad they signed him regardless
