Barry Larkin was vocal about not wanting to bat first, and both Reggie Sanders and Ron Gant were middle-of-the-order hitters. Thomas Howard and Jerome Walton weren't slow, but they weren't 30+ SB threats like Lewis.

It may not have made much sense to keep putting Lewis out there, but it would've been fairly unconventional to use someone else on the roster.
like taking your cleanup hitter from the last two years and batting him 1st or 2nd the next year.

I will give Dusty credit for be willing to change things up lineup wise, when Stubbs wasn't getting it done at leadoff.

That wasn't a trade. That was a salary dump.

Plus it was a "get this guy out of town" move. Wells had become Marge's least favorite player for many of the things he had said. He wanted out, and they wanted him out. People were surprised they were able to get a breathing person for him, considering how badly the Reds wanted to get rid of him.

Re: Reds' magic number

He didn't play in the postseason due to injury, but he had a great September that helped the Reds clinch the division:

I love a stat that can improve while the team is still losing! Hopefully if this team backs into the playoffs, they'll get the same results as 1990.

Yes, that would be good.

Let's all hope they aren't taking any playoff advice from the most recent Cincinnati postseason team to back in.... the '09 Bengals.
